Coolant level low when cold?

Why is the coolant level low about 3 or 4 inches when it is cold? But when it get to operational temps it is to top of the radiator? Info 71 Chevy 350 engine automatic trans. I have flush the coolant. It doesn't overheat just bothersome.

Don't worry, that's normal. As your coolant heats up it expands, and needs somewhere to go. If you are worried about it, you could get a coolant recovery bottle & a closed system radiator cap. This would insure your radiator was full to the top all the time, and keep coolant from pouring out your over flow tube.

Re: Coolant level low when cold?

3-4 inches below the neck is normal cold fill level. If you fill it up higher than that it will drain out the overflow tube when hot and return to the cold fill level after a few heat cycles.
