If you're looking down at the top of the cap, #1 is the second plug clockwise of the harness plug-in.

Technically, it doesn't really matter which plug you use for #1, as long as that's the one that the rotor is pointing to when you're at TDC on the compression stroke for cylinder #1.

If you don't think your rotor is lining up right, the correct way to do it is to get your engine to TDC on the compression stroke for #1, remove the distributor cap, and make a mark on the body of the distributor at the point the rotor is facing. When you put the cap back on, the plug directly over that should be #1.

In general, in this position you want the rotor pointing generally towards cylinder 1 (front, drivers side), because that gets your distributor facing the correct direction for the vacuum advance port and the power hookups.

Good luck,

Brian

Plug wire #1 is at the 5 o'clock position. Clockwise from there it's 8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Check the firing order, a small block chevy firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. #1 cylinder is the first cylinder on the drivers side(left) and distributor rotation is clockwise.

Talking WOW!

It been a while since the truck started up easly without the gas peddle being held down. it was nice. I just need to get that timing on right, but it just started raining. Even though I love rain. it's not the best thing when tuning a engine.
