not a chevy but a ford question 66-f100

so I have a chance to pick up a 66 f100 with a lincoln 460 engine. Truck is lowered, has mini tube rear and ford 9". Has power steering and breaks and heater. Inside is clean and has tonnel cover. Looks nice from a distance but up close there was some rust and some bondo from what I seen. It looked to me like a shady attemp at a restore. Truck drove great and rides nice but I can see that there was some surface rust in places and under the truck. I am going to look at it better tomorrow. My buddy took it in as a trade at his shop and want 3k for it. I hav eno plans to restore it, just drive it as is. From what he said it lived a good life as a daily driver but lived on the coast. Think it is worth it?

3k for a tubbed ride with a 460 sounds pretty darn good regardless. If it's a cruiser you're after rather than a project I'd focus on making sure the drivetrain is sound - with a 3k price most everything else is gravy.

Good luck with it!

Nothing wrong with a vintage truck of that genre'.Sounds like a cruzer for when you don't wanna worry about paint and such. You never know, you might fall in love.It will be less likely to be parked next to one like it,that's for sure.

Re: not a chevy but a ford question 66-f100

Wow. as long as it's not horribly rusty, it sounds like a good deal. Remember big tires like that are expensive, and a 460 is not a mileage miser. Any 72 and older truck is cool. As long as you can put up with the odd way F*rd builds some parts, (Better Idea????), cause it sure ain't the way anyone else does. I say go for it, you'll have fun.

And post some pics!

Re: not a chevy but a ford question 66-f100

has an extra tailgate with the truck too. I guess it boils down to the under condition of the floor pans and the frame... heading out now to put it on the racks and check it out... let you guys know later as to what i find

Re: not a chevy but a ford question 66-f100

I can't say that is a 3K truck IMO. Way too much going on under the paint in my eyes, and those tubs look horrible. If it were a short bed, I might consider it...but still, looks like it has a lot of underlying body issues.

Re: not a chevy but a ford question 66-f100

just got back from driving and inspecting the under side of the truck. Drives nice, has 4 wheel disc breaks and the front end is tight. There was a oil leak and from what I can tell it is comming from the upper rear of motoe, looks like a valve cover. Also the tranny pan is leaking. So it looks like minor issues there........ Now for the rust..... passenger side under the floor pan the first layer shield has rusted through in some spots and the corner of the bed has rust. As for the frame, has just the many years of surface rust, so that can be cleaned and painted. The entire exhaust system in sturdy but all kinds of rust on it. So it would have to be eventually replaced. Yes there is some rust issues and i think the paint might be hidding more. All in all it is a workable truck but something I would leave as is and drive it. Truck really runs and starts well. I think it could use some plugs, wires and slight tuneup stuff. Not sure if it is worth the 3k... so I am scratching my head at this one right now. What do you all think

Re: not a chevy but a ford question 66-f100

i will admit to having owned a ford (62 unibody).
that 66 would have the twin i beam under it and i would be curious as to how its been lowered, however you say it drives out fine. all in all sounds like its the 460 being sold and you get the truck with it. like you said youre not looking at it as project but a driver, but we all know how that goes

sounds like your trying to convince yourself to buy it. im assuming you don't have a lot of ford parts laying around and based on that i would say pass.

it looks cool but i think you could do better with a 73-up longbed square.

Re: not a chevy but a ford question 66-f100

if i had a choice between that one and an identical on with crap/worn paint and it was 50 bucks cheaper i would go with that. it looks like there is allot of sin hiding under the paint. i wouldnt pay any more for it because it, at one time had a nice paintjob

Re: not a chevy but a ford question 66-f100

thanks all,,,,,, I just have the feeling that there is issues under the paint. There is just too much rust under the truck and in the cracks and around the bed. Even in the engine bay there is rust and the water pump is rusted over the top and the manifold has that rough salt water look to it.... so I am going to listen to my inner voiced that is saying pass, unless I can get it for way less and even then i have to really think about it.

it might be easier to start with a more original one, you still will have to put worn into it but hopefull it wont al be correcting other people mistakes
