Thumbs up Chevy SSR Pace truck

The SSR will serve as the official pace truck for the 87th running of the indianapolis 500 on may 25th 2003.

This mark's the 14th time a chevrolet product served as the official pace vehicle.

The most apperances by any brand since 1911.

Chevrolet like a rock

Well, I love the fact that a Chevy is going to be a pace truck again, but....that is one ugly piece crap.... or another sorry attempt at GM making a nice truck.

When will they learn??????

Another vehicle I won't buy since I probably can't fit in it I don't like it either. Too "bubbly" for me.

Automobile manufacturers should really consider consulting the public before going with a design, or at least us gearheads. I have several suggestions for GM on this thing. I do however like the seats. I am sure though, when the right person gets ahold of one of these and shows us what can be done with it, the SSR will grow on us.

GM doesn't have a clue. They are going downhill so fast it sucks. I hate to say this with a passion, but Ford is making them look bad. Just look at some of the things they are building, the Lightning, Mustang still, the new retro T-bird, etc.

Now stand back and look at the crap GM is building. Only thing GM still has going for it is the Corvette. How long will it be before they either quit building it or mess it up.

OK, so some like the SSR, I can understand this. But, if you build this, why stick and underpowered engine in it? What's the point of this? Come on GM, get back to what you used to be, the leader in power and looks.

I think I'll stick with older vehicles for modding. This new stuff has soured my enthusiasm. I'll not buy something just because it's a rare truck or a retro vehicle. I will have to like it too or it ain't being parked in my drive.

T-bird was a flop. It will be gone by 2005, due to inadequate sale, so Ford ain't doing everything right.

No thanks. Not a big fan of that design at all! I agree with Mike in that GM has to do something soon or they're going to loose their loyal customers.

SS should mean "beats the sh#t outa blue oval". Evidentaly GM did not get the memo on the Lightning...
Quote:
Lightning: 380 hp, 450 ft-lbs.
SSR wont be able to compete with only 290hp, 325 ft-lbs.

GM is definetly going down the crapper They held onto the old truck styling probably a little too long. I didn't mind it, but evidently I am not the majority out here. Take a look at the new cars coming out, they are butt However, every car company is going to crap like that so evidently that is what the public wants.

Give me my 60's-early 70's cars and my mid 80's trucks and I am happy. I don't want to drive a bubble.

That thing I just saw is proof! I agree with gchemist. Looks like a dang VW Bug.

Sorry Chris, just used the T-bird as an example of what can be done, and done nicely. It's not a bad looking car, even if ford did build it. I'm thinking the reason it's going out is because of price, right?

IMO, none of the auto manufacturers are doing anything right, not for the most part. Every dang car they build looks exactly the same as any other, well except for the Aztec syles. Who wants to drive a damn piece of plastic? Not me. It's all about emissions and fuel mileage. They have to make them meet federal specs and the only way to do it is by using unibodies, and plastic.

GM went in the wrong direction several years back and are trying to climb back up. But, they are not doing a very good job at it. They have no one, and I mean no one, who can design a car or truck anymore. The only reason folks buy these pieces of crap is because a great many like to drive new cars and will buy one every 3, 4, or 5 years. They have no other choice but to buy this crap if they want to drive a new vehicle.

It's not a matter of what we want. It's a matter of what GM wants, and to me it seems it's all about making money off of under powered, ugly as hell, pieces of junk. This is what's wrong today, it's all about what the bean counters think, not what the public wants. I for one refuse to play into their hands anymore. I'm not buying any of these so called sports vehicles. I don't like them and will not give them my hard earned money for it. At least not until they do something right, and I don't see this happening anytime soon.

its all up to the bean counters....unfortunately. The SSR is not built to be fast...its built to be a rich persons cool truck. That is all. And at 40k + That is all that will be driving them Personally I would not pay more than 20k for one...small bed, underpowered and over hyped. They are cool but not that cool. Yes Ford has been making the right moves...as has dodge....GM is just busy screwing the pooch right now. And Mike..They are trying to F Up the new Vette.. . Have a look....

Dave,

of course we can't see what's under the covers, but it looks to me the thing is fairly ugly. Cutting corners and taking short cuts to save some money it seems to me. No hide away headlights sucks. This has been a Vette thing for a very long time. I guess it cost too much money to have them any more.

No doubt another bean to count. Not enough money coming in if they build them the right way. Build them cheaper and charge more for them. I wonder when they will come out and say, "well, it's over. Corvettes are not worth the effort any more. We are stopping production in" We know it's only a matter of time. They have screwed everything else up they touch. Why not the Vette too?

Oh, I know what they will do next. They will make it a front wheel drive car, like the rest of the junk they are making now. That's it. FWD Vette. Man, that makes me want to go buy one now. How about you guys?

I always get a kick from people who think GM is going down hill. Has anyone been paying attention to Cadillac? Look at the 2004 CTS V-series (400hp/390lb-lt of torque from the LS6 and only available with a 6-speed manual), the C6 based XLR which stickers for 75K, or the Escalade line. What about the 2004 GTO and Grand Prix? The 2004 Malibu and Saturn "Red Line" series are nice vehicles as well. GM has the best trucks and SUV's in the business hands down!

I love older cars and trucks from the good ol' days just as much as the other guy. However, these late-model vehicles are also well built and reliable.

Here's a picture of the CTS V-series.

This is not a good example. Why do they think it's a good idea to build a 40 grand family car for the general public? There are other people who drive cars besides the rich.

What's up with building a fast Caddy anyway? It's like this. The masses couldn't afford a Camaro or TA. Maybe the older gens who had saved money for years to waste on cars could. The younger generation who would love to have them, couldn't afford to drive one. Even if they could swing the payments, insurance would kill them. So they were sold to the middle age folks. Not many middle aged folks wanted sports cars, or at least the Camaro or TA types of cars. So, GM starts thinking, here's what we do. We'll build a fast, sports Caddy. This will make the middle aged family car types buy these things. You know, the ones who can actually afford to pay 40 grand for something to drive everyday.

Again, bean counters at work for GM.

And yes, they are selling out for beans.
