1972 Medium Olive Poly 504, PPG #2097?

I'm having a hard time finding some place to get UB Basecoat made to PPG #2097, 1972 Medium Olive Ploy 504. I'm sure someone has found it. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks, Lee

Dupont is what is used on my 72 medium olive. I used PPG on black and white because of high solids content in clear, the dupont waxes it tail, never again with the ppg.

I see you found your medium olive paint! What did you end up with, and where did it come from, if you don't mind my asking. Do you have a build thread or pictures posted?

Re: 1972 Medium Olive Poly 504, PPG #2097?

Ok, this is what i ave found out, the old paint codes (pre 80) made with todays base coats do not look like the old colors, they are way off. Single stage urathanes are pretty close. For two stage you need to have the base custom mixed to the old chips or a panel. I had mine custom mixed by Twin Cities Paint in San Diego. Not perfect but close. No build thread but I do have a short album in my profile that I add to every once in a while.

Thanks for the information, this is good to know. I guess I had better save the backside of my glovebox door to use to color match. I looked through your album. Are you doing the painting yourself? That truck is looking fantastic!

Amazing trucks here guys, thanks so much for all the input.

I'm thinking about going Medium Olive 504 and white (I think it's 521?) roof.

Excellent Choice! There are a number of threads you can search on the board about some of the difficulties with matching the 504 color using today's paints. I ended up using PPG's OMNI line of paint, and had the paint shop mix me up a small can to test with. I was shocked at how well it matched, when I compared a test panel with my original glove box door.

Oh wow, that's flawless man. So I was getting some quotes here and there, I found a shop that uses Nason paint, it was considerably cheaper and honestly the cars they had on display looked great + 5 year warranty included on the work. Any thoughts on that brand of paint?

Unfortunately, I've only ever painted one vehicle. This one

The board here does have a paint and body section, you should pop over there and ask. There's some very knowledgeable folks over there.

Is that a GMT 400 hood? Are you planning to paint that truck this color? (or just the test strip as mentioned) I bet it would look fantastic.

Re: 1972 Medium Olive Poly 504, PPG #2097?

That's a spare hood off my '95 suburban. My son ran it into a tree, so we put a junkyard hood on the suburban, and I kept the old one for practice body working and painting. The thought had occurred to me, when I saw how nice the hood turned out. I was thinking maybe a two tone with this green on top, and silver below the trim line would look good.

Agree, that would look nice. I like the GMT400s, but not a lot of great color choices compared to the 67-72 era. I have a "practice" fender, same purpose, ha. I probably need a "practice" truck,

If your anything like me a practice truck quickly turns into a project which then turns into a yard full of projects and not enough time or money to do them the way you’d like

FWIW, I sprayed my truck with PPG's Omni. I'm REALLY happy with how it turned out.
I also really like their Omni MP170 epoxy primer. I just about fainted when my local jobber rang up my last gallon. It cleared the two hundred dollar hurdle by two dollars! It was $202 with two quarts of the activator.
If you spray MP170 on properly treated metal, you're done. That stuff ain't coming off unless you want it to.

I used the MP170 myself, and agree that it's very good. I scratched the paint a time or two when I was putting the truck back together, but never managed to scratch through the epoxy.
