Wheel question...

Ok so I am going to buy a set of wheels soon and plan on going with 18s since I am a lil old school and still like some tire under my fender but i notice alot of folks putting wider wheels in the back and I know it looks outstanding but I want to get the most life from my tires and want to be able to rotate them. So can I not just run the same size on the front and rear like they did from factory? I assume its just the looks everyone is going for and I am all about the wider tires but anywho just curious. And these will be going on my 71 swb with ece 4/6 drop.

Talking Re: Wheel question...

I never rotate tires. Don't believe in it, here's why;

Had a Jaguar XJ in the 90's that when I first got it went through tires like candy. Rotated them and kept close eye on pressures and alignment... kept happening.

Finally got new tires and left them alone. Found which 'corner' was the culprit, I had a bad bearing on one side of the rear suspension that the alignment guy never caught. Fixed that and tires wore like iron from then on.

I'm going with staggered tires/wheels on my 67, can you dig it?

Re: Wheel question...

I would go with the staggered setup. I think these trucks look better with a little wider tire out back. JMHO tho. Joseph

Re: Wheel question...

In the looks department, the staggered setup is better, but we get what you're saying about rotation. With a 4/6 drop, you limit how wide you can actually run up front, but I've seen a few guys run 255/55/18's on all four corners with 8" or 8.5" wheels. Any bigger or wider than that up front will start causing interference.

Re: Wheel question...

If you want all the same in order to rotate, then I would suggest going with an 18x8... maybe 18x9 all around. ALso depends on tire size you want to run.

The staggered does look good though. Let me know if I can help you out.... what style wheels are you looking to go with?

I'll be the smarty pants here. It's your truck, do what you like. If, after you do it, you don't like it, there are always some piranha around that will buy the other two wheels. Personally, I like the drag look, skinny pennies up front and big wide roasters out back.

Rotaing tires is overrated.

Re: Wheel question...

I think in the end, I would go with the overall look you want. If you like the look of staggered, then I suggest that. Sometimes these trucks are weekend cruisers and not DD's (some are DD's, which I think is sweet), so rotating tires is not a big deal. The mileage it sees per year is not a lot, and worth running the wider tire in the back.

Make sure when you see your truck, you think to yourself..... "Now that looks sweet "... and not "I should have done it the other way".

Re: Wheel question...

i have to disagree with the non-rotation nay-sayers. It does add a few miles to the life of the truck, unelss your suspension is absolutely flawlessly tuned, in which case there is no benefit to rotation. Mine aint, so I rotate, and I get more miles on a set of tires than if I don't. I've tried it both ways on the same truck, always turns out I get a few more miles on em when I rotate - approx 6-10k estimated. (this is on my dd, not my 66 - it unfortunately doesn't see the miles my dd does )
