Fuel gauge question

OK so when I took out my gauge cluster to clean it all up and paint the needles, I think I moved the gas needle a little bit. So tonight I went and filled the tank full and thinking the needle would be off I was trying to push it back to full to make it right but it just kept going over the full mark. WEW windy I know lol. So my question is......well the fuel gauge auto set it self or is it totally jacked now? Im going on a long drive and dont really know where to trust the gauge is at haha

Re: Fuel gauge question

I don't know if its jacked or not but it woundnt hurt to carry a 3 or 5 gallon gas can in the back till you find out where needle sits on empty.

Re: Fuel gauge question

Use a few 2 or 3watt wire wound resistors or a decade box and a 12v battery or 14v DC power supply to bench test/re-calibrate the gauge.

The values come from my bench tests using a bench top DC power supply set to 14.5vdc (Delco alternator regulator voltage), a General Radio 1432 decade resistance box, and several 76-91 fuel gauges. The gauges all read the same with a tolerance of plus or minus 2 ohms.

Ώ, Gauge Reads
90, F
76, 7/8
64, 3/4
53, 5/8
45, 1/2
37, 3/8
29, 1/4
18, 1/8
00, E

Gauge contacts are arranged as follows

...........GND...........

12v IGN.......SENDER

Re: Fuel gauge question

Well easier yet. I just drove 400 miles today and with all the pushing around the needle I did I can tell you that it did set its self. I filled it over full and drove it till the needle hit E before gassing up. So it reads just fine. Thanks all for the responses.
