Interchangable sport bumpers

I've been looking for a driver quality sport bumper for my 85 swb for a while now. A buddy offered to hook me up with a sport bumper and brackets from his 86 Blazer. I've read the Blazer/Suburban inner brackets won't work, but I wanted to confirm the outers and the bumper will fit just like the sport bumper should.

Anybody have knowledge on the feasibility of this?

Re: Interchangable sport bumpers

Bumpers will be the same, so will the outer brackets.

Done this on my truck before.

Re: Interchangable sport bumpers

Thanks for the help, Jeff. I'm gonna try to score the bumper and outer brackets tomorrow. Now I just need to run across some inner brackets.

mopar346, here's a pic of a rear sport bumper:

Re: Interchangable sport bumpers

You really don't need the inners, just run the outers until you find them...it will be plenty sturdy.

Re: Interchangable sport bumpers

Not far at all! I took a day off today and pulled it. It was a pita to get off like pretty much any part from a 30 year old truck, but I got it home, stripped down, cleaned up, and washed off. I need to go buy some new bumper bolts and bracket bolts, then I'll work on swapping out my step bumper.

Anybody know what size the bumper carriage bolts are offhand? I was gonna score some new ones off ebay unless someone knows a better (non-LMC) source.

Not to hijack, but are all 73-87 pickup sport bumpers the same?
I believe the carriage bolts are 1/2".

Re: Interchangable sport bumpers

73-80 are the same then 81 and up. In my opinion just the outers are not good enough. I have done this on my 85 and if you step on the rear bumper at all with just the outers it moves downward

Re: Interchangable sport bumpers

Thanks Keith. I was about to pull one from a 87 Blazer for my 73 pickup. I will start searching the older Blazers and Burbs.

If you find a 73-80 blazer or burb,... grab the outer brackets also.
They are the same as the pickups.

The inner brackets are different.
You will need "pickup specific" inner brackets.

Re: Interchangable sport bumpers

Out of pure curiosity, what's different about the pickup brackets vs the Blazer/burban ones? Is it something to do with the fuel tank vs spare tire or?

The inner Blazer brackets are really short and stubby and L-shaped. Here's a pic:

Looks like you have a nice bumper. Can you post some pics of it installed?

Sure, when I get around to installing it. I need to round up some new frame bolts and some carriage bolts.
