Firewall Insulation Pad Installation

I'd like to install new firewall insulation in my 72 Chevy. Are the insulation pads made so that they can be slipped over or around the things protruding from the firewall (like the steering column and fuse box) or is it necessary to disassemble the fusebox, steering column, etc. from the firewall before installing the pads?

Thanks!
