2004 gmc envoy

having an issue with overheating intermittently its a 5.3 engine the gauge goes up and then it will go down in about 5 minutes not sure what this is any help would be great changed the radiator cap already

Sounds like the thermostat is sticking.

How's the coolant level? Does it do it when idling or when driving or both?

I'd suspect thermostat. Mine was doing the same thing and continually got worse until I changed it out.

Also, I'd check to make sure the fan is working properly, that the radiator is cleaned out, and that the water level is full.
