Hood ornament or not? Show em' off.

I've always liked the hood ornaments for the squares. Been thinking about getting one for my 82 but with the bumper guards I'm wondering if it would be too much up front. What do you all think? Let's see what you all have.

Why do I have a feeling something bad is about to happen?

I like hood ornaments on bone stock trucks with stock mirrors, moldings and emblems. On lowered trucks, the hood ornament takes away from the sporty look.

Buying them is spendy since lmc wants 1250000 dollars for one.
Always wanted to take one apart and put a target reticle on it.

awesome. just something I quickly realized is that one of those pyramid looking step drill bits is for sure the way to go.

Re: Hood ornament or not? Show em' off.

It keeps from switching to different sizes. bigger the hole you need further down the bit you go (further you drill in) And because of the thickness it feels alot more solid and i have never had one break on me. unlike other ones. just my experience. Ones I have each "step" or hole size is not very tall it quickly hits the next size so Its good on thinner pieces only.

it keeps holes round and not triangular when drilling through sheet metal.

Hood ornaments belong on Cadillacs and Mercedes, not trucks. Unless its a Mack. Im not feeling the bumper guards either, I removed them off my 75 GMC. Just my opinion..

I don't like them. In fact I was trying to trade hoods with someone that wanted one. If not by the time I am ready to weld up all the holes from de- badging it, it will get filled as well

I think it depends on who you ask, because everyone has their own opinion.

After owning several modified trucks over the years, I want my 1987 truck to keep most of the original look (save drop, wheels, & color). I'm in process of changing the mirrors on mine back to the dumbo-mirrors.

When I want to drive a truck that looks more modern with no badging, hood ornament or bumper guards, I drive my new truck.

Damon: it's your truck, you paid for it & you are doing the work on it....so build it however it makes you happy!

Re: Hood ornament or not? Show em' off.

i like the bumper guards, hood ornament emblems. I'm not a fan of the shaved look anymore stock look maybe lowered is the look i growing to really love. I've thought about drilling the holes back out for my dealership badges on my 71 even. My dad always told me that my grandpaw used the hood ornament to get the car in the center of his lane by keeping the ornament on the white line/edge of the road.

They are ideal for sheetmetal because they do not have twisted flutes. Drilling larger sized holes in thin materials, with ordinary bits, results in a corkscrew effect. Non-round holes and deformed surfaces are often part of the deal too.
Step bits are straight fluted so none of this happens. They cut clean. I am a bit annoyed buy the price, but the results can't be beat.

Gordon is right; do what you like, it's your truck. I personally like them, but I am weird, too.

I thought you were talking about a step drill as a hood ornament
