Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

between their rockers and also inside the doors? I am going to be spraying some SEM rust preventer in between the rockers and also inside the new doors. http://www.semproducts.com/product-c...ust-preventer/ I figure this is a little extra insurance so it will stay nice for awhile.

Re: Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

It sounds like a good idea to me. We did that when we did the build on my '67.

Re: Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

Yes! I filled every hollow space in mine.

Doors, cab corners, rockers, fenders, bed sides, etc. I did this with Tectyl ML. Don't know if you can puchase that in the US but it's probably almost the same stuff as SEM's. Best you can have is Mike Sander Fett. But hard to come by in the States I guess and pretty hard to apply. (Google it)

Just pour it in every hollow space you can imagine until it flows out of the holes. This way water can't stay anywhere. I live in a very wet climate with salt on the roads during the winter, so I have to do the best I can.

You can see the drips in my door:

Re: Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

I use Zero Rust for protection. Works better than POR-15. My engine bay, frame and suspension are holding up very well.

Re: Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

We are talking about hollow spaces right? For hollow spaces you need a waxy of fat kind of stuff. That por-15 holds up good on your frame doesn't say that it is enough for the inside of your doors.

Best way is to give it first a coat with something like por-15 or any other kind of rustpreventive paint. (difficulty is to get it properly in the hollow spaces). Second is a coat of wax or fat, like SEM's

Throw this article in Google Translate. It's a research on hollow space rust prevention.

I'm going to use a wax product sold by eastwood for the bottoms of my doors, rockers and cab corners.

Re: Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

I just picked up some cheap 3m undercoating/sound deadened and coated the inside of my doors last night. My new aftermarket window seals totally suck so my doors always have water in them, which worries me. I also bought speaker baffles for mounting my new 6x9s in my doors, so they won't get wet.

Re: Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

Is there a way to get some kinda rust protector into the rockers where they always seem to rust out? If not I was going to drill holes when I replace mine on the underside and put a removable rubber plug. That way I can get in there and spray some fluid film or something in there to keep the new rockers from rotting out. I was also thinking of doing this from the inside to get some in the cab corners where they rot out.

I am thinking that you can remove the plug on the front of the outer rocker and get to it that way.

Re: Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

I'd never use tectyl, Brockway used that in their 700 series cabs in 75-77 and the only part of the cab/doors that didnt rust, was where the sticker was! Kinda like Rusty Jones.... lol

75chev4x4, Not sure if you can get to it without removing or pulling out the bottom of the fender. But here is the plug on my 85 with the front end off.

Valvoline/Tectyl has many different products, so it depends on what you are using and how often you do a check.

Tectyl ML works pretty good. You do have to spray it over a little each year though. Tectyl underbody coating sucks. It cracks and rusts underneath. It is also very hard to get off.

With a spray straw you can reach every place you want. For the Tectyl it's like 25" long.

Re: Does anyone spray rust preventer ....

Old engin oil mixed 10 parts oil to 1 part kerosene will penetrate the seams in doors rockers and cab corners, works a treat.
