HELP I Screwed UP...I Think?

1) well i got the horn contact kit from chevytruckandcarshop.com as well as other parts... so i put the horn contact kit installed to best of my knowledge but then the horns Worked bUT wont shut off_ so i unplugged horns and but i didn't touch steering wheel so i think the horn was still going off... 2) so i then decide to put on my safety neutral switch...wrong part so put old one back on but lost 1 screw. and after all this the horn ,s.n switch ...the 1972 GMC is dead-... i charged battery ,nothing...then tried to jump start it which then melted my jumping cables but no lights no power nothing ...what did i fry? i thought the horn contact or S N switch etc...but battery started to boil a bit i think....any ideas the truck was perfectly fine until this morning???

Sounds like you have a serious short somewhere. Start tracking down your power wires and look for where it may be grounding itself

Re: HELP I Screwed UP...I Think?

the only thing that would cause that large of ground out would be one of the main power cables or the wire that goes from the alternator to the starter.

Re: HELP I Screwed UP...I Think?

If you followed the LMC Truck diagram for the horn contact assembly it is wrong. Search posts here for the correct order of install. Small fish compared to the other probs but this will alleviate the continuous horn honk at least. Hang in there!

When putting things together, DO NOT overtighten the 3 screws that hold everything in place!

The spring steel must be able to "spring" in order to shutoff the horns!

Really, just make sure they all have a good bite on the threads and call it good.

Made the same mistake!

Re: HELP I Screwed UP...I Think?

If your horn was stuck on after installing the contact and you just unplugged the horn, the horn relay will still be closed and deplete your battery, even with the horn itself unplugged.

If you just unplugged the horns, your horn relay is still pulling power. You need to unhook your horn kit or unplug the relay until you get the kit figured out.
