Staring at "wheel" crossroads

So I'm having a bit of an issue. My truck is 95% "complete" and just discovered a bit of an issue. I have 15x8 truck rallys on the rear and 15x6.5 truck rallys on the front. The front wheels have enlarged bolt holes from a previous owner. My dad and I seem to think that it's loose enough that it may be a safety hazard, so it looks like I'm at a bit of a crossroads. The cheapest option is probably finding some replacement rallys, preferably 15x7, to replace the damaged ones. My dad is interested in replacing all 4 with Cragar S/S wheels as he would have done 40 yrs ago. Would you start looking for some replacement truck rallys or get the Cragar's?

I guess it depends on who is footing the bill.

The cheepest route would be 2 new truck ralleys for the front.

I like the way your dad thinks and I know your truck would really look nice with Cragers. The rallys will always be an easy find. 15 x 7 is the most common size and they even put them on vans. You could pick up a pair for under $50.00 any time, I am sure.

Maybe you can work on both and have a option for a different look on occasion.

Those rallies are pretty sweet on that truck imo. I say stick with them cheaper and looks great.

Rallys as they never go out of style and they never look "dated". The Crager S/S while nice have a real dated look to them. Ok if you are actually shooting for "that look" but they don't get it that well. for five spokes on this style of truck these days I'd go with 16 inch American wheels in the classic old five spoke pattern. They look great and give you enough tire sidewall to look right on older trucks.

I bought 2 - 15x10 truck rallys from Wheel Vintiqes. they will be going on the back with 15x8's on the front on my '87...Just another option to consider

My 69' I have custom 12" wide rallys on the back with 8's on he front, but those are 6 bolt.

Hello shearjs, I love your truck I would keep the rallies IMOI just got a 1971 gmc 2wd with factory 402 ps pdb a/c How did you lower your truck, Mine was done by the PO he removed 1 leaf spring in the rear and cut 1 coil in the front Here are some pics of mine enjoy THANKS 7d1truckguy (Marc)

My vote would be rallies. Truck looks very nice and period correct, as it is.

20s can make or break one of these trucks. Rallies are as symbolic to these trucks as polyester shirts with huge collars, hairy chests and gold chains were to the 70s.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I really like the rallys myself, so I'm going to be on the lookout for a couple replacement wheels for the front. Down the road a ways, I may look at picking up a set of Cragar's, just to appease my pops. If anyone has any leads on some replacement rallys, I'm all ears! Thanks.

That's a great looking truck! You're starting with a much much nicer truck than we did. My truck was originally a long bed leaf spring rear. I had a 72 stepside shortbed parts truck that came with the purchase of the 70 GMC, so we swapped everything over to the short trailing arm frame. After seeing all the solid reviews on here of the Early Classic 4/6 drop kit, that's what we decided to use. It worked out great!

if those were my two options it would be the rallies. try a local swapmeet or wheel vintiques for new ones.

Wish I could find the thread (maybe someone else knows where it is at) but someone posted about a month ago that they couldnt decide on rallies or cragars either.

It just so happened that they had both sets and posted pictures. I had always liked cragars myself, but had to agree once seeing the pictures side by side that the rallies looked better on these trucks in my opinion.

I was about to pull the trigger on some 18" cragar style wheels until I saw that post and that made me decide to keep my rallies.


Also if you have any local junk yards that still have some older vehicles go in and ask them if you can look around for some old steel wheels for an old truck you have (Dont take your truck...lol). Even though they know what rally wheels are they tend to not price gouge you so much if they think you dont consider special.

While it is true that lots of truck ralleys are run on these trucks, they are not period correct (late 70's early 80's is when I remember them being introduced)...the only period correct ralley wheel would be a car ralley (like on 7d1truckguy's truck above) , which is what I like the best by the way.

I couldn't agree more. Rallies are period correct for our trucks. Cragars look best on cars IMO.

Great choice, your truck looks great with them on it I wouldnt have changed it either.

Excellent point. A friend of mine in HS, back in the late 70s, had an El Camino and ran Vette rallies. Similar, but they are different.

This sparks a question, btw. The "derbies" on those car rallies...can those be used on the later model truck rallies?
