rear diff fluid level
Still learning the ins and out of my new vehicle-2006 1500 2wd. Went to check the fluid level on the rear diff and found a new surprise. Being used to the older vehicles that fill to the bottom of the plug,at first I was surprised and thought my level was way too low. Then I noticed that the plug on my 2006 was much higher in the diff case than the older ones. Checking the owners manual I see now that the level should be 5/8"-1 5/8" below the bottom of the plug. I am used to sticking my smallest finger in to find fluid level. However if I was able to get my finger in 1 5/8",I don't think I'd ever get it out. Are there any tricks for determining fluid levels in this diff?

Re: rear diff fluid level
Me too: I stick my smallest finger in to find fluid level so that is close to the level 5/8" down. If I can touch the fluid it's good. If I can't touch it I add till I can.

Re: rear diff fluid level
How about using a bendy straw...??? works for me...if you bend it at 90° then snake it through the hole...take it back out and check the level...???

Re: rear diff fluid level
Actually what I tried and worked very well was a bent q-tip. The cotton end showed the presence of oil very well. Thanks guys.

Re: rear diff fluid level
I read somewhere once, to use an Allen wrench. I did and it work pretty good.
