1st step accomplished

Now the real work begins, not sure how much how fast I will be redoing it. I'm sure I will be on here quite often asking what if and how to type questions. I will just tell everyone thanks early for all your help.

Your pic has to be posted online to use [IMG] tags. The easiest way to show it is to go down to the "manage attachments" button under the text box when you post and upload to this site.

There it is! Nice project truck. Are you gonna keep the spare tire fender? I've seen some that look pretty cool with a matching tire and wheel on there.

I would rather find a fleet side bed for it, but if I don't find 1 yeah I'm going to get a matching set of 5 and mount it on there. The front clip and cab are in pretty decent shape but the bed needs a whole lot of tlc. The frame is in really good condition. To tell a funny story about the frame though the kid I bought it from had told me that he had cleaned most of the frame and undercoated it, when I got there it had only been done partly under the bed. It won't take much to clean it up and ready to paint it.

I prefer fleetsides myself, but some of those steppers do look good. That's good that he frame is good. Is the truck a '67 or a '68? I noticed it has a '67 front fender but it has '68 rear fenders.

After a double take, its got '68 front end trim, too. Have you checked the VIN? The 5th digit will be a 7 if it is a '67 and an 8 if it is a '68. Some very early 68's had small rear windows.

Boy you asked a million dollar question there, because it is titled as a 67 and according to the vin on the cab, frame, glove box door matches the title but the fenders are what I have always recognized as 68 the front fenders had marker lights that had been filled in. I actually asked the kid if he knew it was a 68 and not 7. So I'm really confused on it. The 5th digit is a 7. Also is it possible that it would have a 12 bolt posi. they think it does but I told them that would really be kind of uncommon. Although it is a v8 truck and it has the original engine in it. 283 ci

If the VIN's match, it is a '67. Somebody could have a put a '68 bed and front trim at anytime on it. 46 years is a long time and they usually have lots of previous owners. I stripped one for paint once and it had a hood that came red, white cab and fenders, green doors, one green bedside, one blue bedside and a blue tailgate. -lol

And yes, a 12 bolt posi was available these trucks, and are not all that uncommon. Most didn't get posi's, but most of them did come with 12 bolts. Some came with Dana 44's.

yeah I think the cab, frame and engine might be original to each other, but the front clip and bed are from a 68. they already took care of the front fenders now all I have to do is fill the hood strip holes, but I think I'll leave the Chevrolet letters on it instead of reinstalling the bowtie. I will have to get a fastener kit for it because they stripped all parts off of it years ago and then lost most of the bolts. That's why you see the straps over the bed and the cowl area. I was afraid of losing the bed and to keep the fenders from beating in and out.

I was telling them about how I just had a 1 tire fire on my last 1 and I was going to leave this 1 alone for now. When he interrupted me by telling me that they did a burn out with it while playing around with both tires spinning.

Also what type of 4 speed would it have in it. It wouldn't have a Muncie in it would it.

Well it would be a Muncie 4 speed, but not a car type muncie 4 speed. If it came with a 4 speed, it would be a Muncie SM-420 truck transmission. They have a real low 1st gear, and were commonly referred to as a "3 speed with a double low" by old timers. 1st gear is pretty much unused, unless you are pulling something very heavy.

As far as the Chevrolet letters, that's what '67 would have came with, so you're good there. The hood bowtie didn't appear until '69. It should have a bowtie in the grill.

Ok so the only thing that needs done to the front is remove the strip across the hood, and it has the high hump in it how hard is it to find the low hump with out the hole for the shifter. I had a 67 with 454/turbo 400 combination and this 1 is going to have a 383/700r4 combo. I have already got the start to the 383 and the auto column. I would like to drive it a few times before I start into it but I have got to figure out the wiring harness 1st because the PO stripped the loom and the wires just go everywhere right now. You don't happen to know the wire colors coming out of the firewall do you. I think my next purchase will be a chiltons for it.

Correct, just remove the trim on the hood and fenders if they are there to correct for '67.

There is really no such thing as a low hump. The "low hump" trucks just had a 1 peice floor pan that didn't have a removeable hump. The high hump trucks had a hump bolted over a factory hole in a low hump floor pan, if that makes sense. You can either cut the missing section out of a donor truck and weld it back in to go with a low hump floor, or you can just weld a patch over the shifter hole in the high hump and leave it there. All big block trucks came with high humps whether they were automatic, 3 or 4 speed.

I would refer to a wiring diagram on wire color. I would trust my memory for that! -lol

The guy I took with me to pick it up wanted to know instantly when I was going to have it finished and I told him that I'm going to try to have a finished project on its 50th birthday. Not sure how that will play out due to I have 1 daughter that is a sophomore in high school and a daughter that is an 8th grader. I will have to buy another set of wheels for the younger 1 being that I bought the older 1 a car. I am pretty fortunate though I have 2 good friends that are really good body men, I will probably do the roughing in and they will finish and paint.

If that old 283 runs decent, I'd leave it in there while you work on it, and drive it around some. I have a 350 and 4 speed OD that is in going in my '68, but I drive it almost daily with 250 and 3 OTT while I'm working on the body.

Thank you 67 C-30 for explaining the high/low hump conundrum. I looked under my truck one day and noticed that the hump had been cut and replaced with a high hump and have wondered why. I guess they had to do that when the BB went in. I just wish they had done a better quality job. Sheet metal screws and silicone everywhere but it has held up since 86 so its functional, just doesn't look well if stick your head under there. Oh well, a future clean up project for me when I get to fixing my own body.


Not to thread jack, to the OP 67Chevy, looks like you've got a great starting point. I'd try and keep the stepside if it were me. I like the look of them.

That's a pretty good idea. Do you happen to know where I can buy just 1 letter for the hood? All letters are there except the c and I'm not to excited about having to buy all 9 letters to get 1. LOL It will need a lot of other things but they are easily found. It is going to need all the trim and headlight parts for the front end, inner fender wells, probably 1 cab corner, radiator, front windshield. Will have to decide what to do with the bed because I don't want to spend money fixing up the step side and then find a fleet for it. I don't think I could ever get my money back out of a step side bed. I think the bed itself will cost me as much in parts as the rest of the truck put together.

Its more of a conversation than a thread premature so your not thread jacking. lol Could you hump been in a 4x4 at some point in its life I see that it has 2 holes and wouldn't the 2nd hole be for the transfer shifter?

Well I got it off the trailer today and started studying and putting together a list of parts needed, but I think I'm going to have to keep it small projects at a time before I get overwhelmed.

I just ran across your thread. Looks like a great truck to build. You are wise to do small projects at a time. I can drive myself crazy when I look at the total project! As others have stated keep the 283 if it runs and drive it when you get the chance. The 383/700 combo sounds great. Hang in there and have a blast building this into YOUR truck. All the best,Dirk

Oh wow! I have the same exact truck, but from 1972. I LOVE my spare tire fender as I like being able to easily reach a spare tire and stepsides just have more character....

BUT if you want to go with a fleetside and your fenders are pretty rot free, I'd be a taker if you were to sell them.

Both of my rear fenders are full of bondo....

I haven't payed a whole lot of attention to the bed yet as I'm more worried about the front end and frame refurbished.
