high tranny fluid level

I recently bought a 2006 1500 Silverado and I am learning the ins and outs of my new truck. It is low milage(50k) and in great shape. I noticed that the fluid level is above the full mark(auto tranny). Don't know how it got there but the fluid is clean and does not have an odor. I am trying to find the easiest way to remove the excess fluid and thought disconnecting the lower cooler hose at the radiator might work. Trouble is I don't know how to disconnect the line. All I have is a Haynes manual and it shows a white plastic connector that you remove and then take off a clip. Mine looks different-it has what looks like a black plastic connector that looks like it would be squeezed to remove. Two questions: is this the best way to remove excess fluid and second how do I disconnect this line" Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: high tranny fluid level

The black cap is a dust cover. Just push it back away from the connector. The connector looks like this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rn...FVBk7AodhRwAqQ . They make a tool to release it easier but their kind of pricey for a one time use. Look at this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ot...FWxp7Aod1w8AnQ for about 20 bucks. You can remove the retaining clip with a pocket screwdriver, just be careful to not loose it when it flys off.

Re: high tranny fluid level

Thanks Buddy-that is an outstanding response. I now understand the fitting. Will see if my local parts guy can get the tool. Many many thanks.

Re: high tranny fluid level

Yes Dude,I drove it a few miles, parked it on level ground and checked it with the tranny in park. I am thinking that the previous owner probably added fluid when he should not have. I have read that one cause could be a leak of coolant into the system from the cooling lines passing thru the radiator. The truck has been very well cared for and was someones baby, not a working truck, but I guess a radiator can go bad even in clean trucks. I want to get the level correct and then watch to make sure it does not rise on its own.

Re: high tranny fluid level

If its getting coolant in it, the tranny fluid will look like a strawberry milk shake. Probably had a service done and they filled it up to the full mark cold. Once it reached operating temp the fluid expanded and made it read over full.

Re: high tranny fluid level

Buddy,I agree with you. I think for some reason, someone put in too much fluid. Both the trans fluid and the coolant in the reservoir are clear with no signs of milkiness, which makes me think they are not mixing. Just need to get the excess out and then monitor to make sure the level remains constant.

Re: high tranny fluid level

I usually run 4L60E's about a pint overfull. The geartrain sits relatively high in the trans compared to other transmissions, The reason for not overfilling them is to keep the fluid away for the spinning geartrain.

Re: high tranny fluid level

I ordered the removal tool (otc tools #7937) which will be here next week. Seems like a good tool to have. Now about that dust cover-Buddy said to just push it back. Is there any trick doing that like twist it,squeeze it or something else?

Re: high tranny fluid level

No trick, just wiggle it a little while pushing away from the connector. It just snaps on like the lid for a plastic bowl.
