My truck bit back.
As my sig line says, my truck is in the body shop--well, actually, it's in pieces in the shop. I've got another cab for it, and I've been stripping stuff out of the old one.
Tuesday evening, I was working on removing the clutch pedal-I had pulled the through-the-firewall rod and was trying to pull the clamped lever off the end of the clutch pedal shaft, when I pushed on the pedal, and the spring took over. The lever caught my right ring finger against the mounting bracket and acted just like a shear: I lost most of the end of the finger. When I pulled it out from under the dash, I had to place the end of the finger back in place; I also had to pluck off the nail, as it was in the way. The guy I was woeking with got me a clean, paper, blue shop towel, and I wrapped the pieces (except for the nail and part of the nail bed) tightly in the towel, and he drove me 15 miles to the ER, where I spent most of the night being reassembled. Not only was the finger "degloved," the bone was snipped right in two. According to the bone doc (who looked things over this AM), if I avoid getting an infection for the next week, I will probably get to keep the finger. In any case, the nail's future is uncertain, though the best chance is that it will grow in wrongly and will have to be removed. I spent all day Wednesday in bed (and puking, as I don't tolerate the pain meds well), and it has taken me a l-o-n-g time to type this out with my left hand (I'm a right-handed English prof with 160 or so papers to grade this coming week--*sigh*). Anyway, learn from my mistake: when playing with the clutch pedal, DETATCH THE SPRING FIRST!!!!! Note to truck: Bad truck! No new bed floor for YOU this year (I have to pay the doctors!). . . .

Ouch! Hope things go well for you! I can sympathize just a bit, over the years I have had several incidents, all on the same hand. First was almost cutting the end off my index finger, having it sewed back on and waiting to see if the nail would grow back, which it did, 90% of normal. Second was an industrial accident that tore off my little finger and almost got my ring finger, which they saved, but is permanently bent and dis-figured. Third was a broken bone at the base of my thumb that I mistook for a wrist sprain, and then it developed a tumor that almost cost me that thumb, but was saved via a bone-graft taken from my hip. The first was bad, the second was horrible, and the third was just plain no fun at all, but the ol' hand has managed to weather all 3 storms, and I'm typing away as I write this (of course I can't reach the "P" key or others on that side without moving my hand - lol), so I guess I'm proof of how the ol' body heals and comes back.
Hang in there, and be glad you still have that finger! Hope everything heals OK.

Sorry to hear about the accident...it can be painful...and I really like all my fingers...
I had something similar happen to me....got into a struggle with an EX-best friend over my filet knife while salmon fishing....unfortunately I lost the pad of my index finger....I didn't loose my finger like you though... I hope everything goes well....

Thats why I got out of the steel fabrication trade many years ago. I used to run hydraulic and flywheel operated shears and punch presses, not to mention the 70 ton brake press. I saw a guy get his pinky crushed in the brake press one day. And all thru the years I've seen carpenters, fishermen etc. etc. with missing fingers. When I see that missing digit my first thought is, "hmmmm, someone wasn't paying attention". As it is I really really like playing my guitars. Stay safe and thanks for the reminder about the clutch pedal, even though I drive an automatic,

15 years ago, rolling a CHEAP 3 wheeled engine stand on concrete floor by holding on to the crankshaft pulley of a small block, fell over and snapped my middle finger on left hand off. Drove to the er and they cleaned it up and sent me to the Naval hospital. They reattached it and it works fine to this day (except the end joint is fused) I can still play guitar and shoot the bird as well as ever!
My advise is listen to the physical therapists, and do the exercises, they hurt like bat**** but if you want it back, do it anyway. Goodluck, Roger
