I find this odd.....

I think its odd that GM would have lower side moulding and then paint stripe the top.. I thought the paint stripe was for low budget trucks like the " inflation fighter " package.. You can just make out the stripe in the photo, but its very visible in person. Whats up with that??

Re: I find this odd.....

Probably a stand alone option as long as there was no upper moulding on the truck. GM wouldn't have cared what it looked like as long as there was some profit in the stripe. Are the striped painted on or tape?

Re: I find this odd.....

You could order them with any options that would physically fit together back then - not like the bundled packages they have on ordering a new car today. Somebody apparently decided they wanted that instead of top and bottom molding.

Re: I find this odd.....

It was an option - I believe it was available on Custom, Custom Deluxe, and Cheyenne levels because the upper trim was only standard on the Supers (I think)

Re: I find this odd.....

RPO D89 came in black or white.
A painted stripe, it was often seen prior to trucks getting loaded down with the belt moldings. Most often seen on the earlier trucks they were available through 72.
A search for D89 will reveal several threads I have posted information and pictures to.
Here is a great thread with reference pictures and measurements.

Re: I find this odd.....

Ok. I see what your talking about now, it's on the asphalt. If you stare at it long enough you can make a face out. Ok back to the regular scheduled program.
I have seen quite few trucks, but never seen the painted strip before. Pretty neat that it is a unique option.

This is not a particularly rare option. Probably have thirty SPIDs showing it. However not many have survived. It is often found to be very worn and faint as your truck is. Most of the time it is only found on the SPID after a truck has been repainted or has had it polished away.
In no way should it be considered a fantasy option. It was very real and present. While it is more often seen on plainer trucks it could be ordered on any 67-72 pickup or chassis cab without an upper/belt molding for $13.00 (in 72). As mentioned earlier it was one of the option included in the YF7 Inflation Fighter package.
