this is not a truck question its a son going to school question. my oldest is
going to UTI for college in a few weeks. they told him the will supply all his tools for school but the mutl-meter they he will be buying through them. i want to try and help him start a tool box while he is in school so that when he starts working he will a least have some of what he needs . most of you on here have been around shops more than i so any suggestions on what tools i should try to find would help alot. thanks

I can't use cheap tools. I used to use Craftsman but they are no longer made in the US. They don't last for me.

I have a great relationship with the Snap-on guy and infact he usually owes me more money (I'm a Stihl dealer) than I owe him. Kobalt tools at Lowes used to be made by Snap-on. I don't believe they are now.

As for the types of tools. He needs ratchets, sockets and extensions. Wrenches of almost every variety and screw drivers.

The only problem with companies like Snap-on is they don't have complete sets like sears and other cheap tool companies do.

I like craftsman because sears is open 7 days a week and I don't have any problems with broken tools. around here you have to chase the crap on guy down then he gives you the song and dance for me anyways. craftsman is a good starter set for him. just my 2 cents for the money craftsman is your best bet snap on is expensive and like speedygonzales they don't have full sets.

I like the professional series not the old stand by ,I like the smooth handles. If you use them a lot .

Think of tools (in this case) as an investment in his future just like tuition. Preparation for his career like investing or saving money needs to be constant and steady unless he has the funds to buy tool outright. Setting aside a tool payment let's him plan ahead for his budget.
I'm definitely not saying spend $60K on a huge box and tool. Showing (and explaining) that tools are a part of his profession and he will need them over the years allows him to plan and budget for future needs like a small business.

I would visit Sears buy a pretty good set of both standard and metric. Sockets, 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2, wrenches, screw drivers, etc. Once he's out and working he will gravitate toward the brand he likes and can slowly begin to supplement and replace.

If I recall correctly Snap On has a discount program for students enrolled in mechanic/tech programs. Give him a chance to get into school and see if that's the case then start your decision making.

I shop for snap-on, mac and matco at the local pawn shops. I have been at this a long time was 1979 when I worked in my first dealership and as my fields changed so did the types of tools I needed. The basics are the same for all of them.
