12 bolt problem

Howdy, I had my 12 bolt 373 rebuilt about 6 years ago, and maybe have 5k miles on it. I put a powertracks no slip in it, and a Richmond gear set. Well, I dropped the oil the other day, and saw a lot of fine fine metal in it. no real chunks. Then I see on the drivers side, next to the main bearing cap the shim is dang near all the way out.. I am sure another one was ground up, causing the metal in the oil. I have never seen this. To my surprise, the gears look good, and are tight, though I don't think it was good on it at all. To be honest, I am sick of the 12 bolts. If I cant fix this, it will be the 4th failure I have had with this rear end. I guess I am asking what would cause this? If I didn't have good tires and rally wheels, I would go 14 bolt. well, and also that I have a grand in this pile...

I've have seen this before. The side bearings have to have preload on them. In order to do that you either have to have a case spreader when you put the shims in, or try and tap the shims in. Tapping thin flimsy shims in is not easy. You have to sandwich it between some thicker ones, or buy some adjustable shims.
I buy the adjustable shims, they are rigid enough to tap in.
I wouldn't worry about the 'glitter' in the oil. Clean it out real good and go with it.

thank you. So just tap that one back in? wont it just walk back out? I wonder if the big loads of wood that I got with it, may have helped flex the tubes enough to do this.. I am stumped~~ ha ha

You cant just tap it in, if its almost out its mangled. Pull the axle's. Remove the carrier bearing caps. Remove the carrier being very careful to keep your shims separate left to right. Measure the mangled shims and get some new ones. Also add .002 shims to each side to make it tighter. Thats why they came out, they weren't tight enough.
Your basically resetting up the ring gear. Don't be intimidated, its not that hard of a job.

Thank you, I will give it a shot. I have nothing to lose here. This rear end seriously only has 2k miles on it. I will let you know how it goes! Off to the SUMMIT STORE!!
