First 72 K5

I have wanted a Blazer for a long time and finally found one close to home. The PO bought it several years ago for a toy but it spent most of its time setting in his barn. He did have a new 400sbc put in it and had the inside lined. The owner before him had all the rust repaired but never painted it. I brought it home and it ran good for just a little bit but from setting so long that did not last long. I have put a new gas tank, fuel pump and carb on it. I have a new HEI to install when I get time. When I get it up and running good it is going to the body shop. I am excited to get the paint and body done so I can do the rest of the small stuff I have planed and enjoy it.

Re: First 72 K5

Finally got it running good and spent a few hours cleaning up the inside. This thing spent most of the last 10 years setting in a barn with the windows down so I have a ways to go.

Do any of you guys have a favorite HEI that us use. I bought a normal one from summit but it will not fit in this blazer. I know they make the small ones but just wondered if there is one model that most use/like the best.

Re: First 72 K5

Went for a drive with the family last night and everyone loved it. It ran and drove great. I Put a new starter on it this morning because it was acting up then I was going to take it out today to do some running around and I lost high gear. So the trend continues fix one thing and another goes out. So I guess my next mission is to find someone to rebuild the tranny.

Re: First 72 K5

Good news!!! I think the transmission may be ok for now. I spent a couple hours last night cleaning up the interior and the kids played in it all evening. At some point the 4X4 shifter got pushed up into low range. Not sure how I missed that but I did and I was happy when I found it like that. Im just glad I didn't take it to the shop and have those guys find it. I am pretty sure they would of had a good laugh for sure.

Re: First 72 K5

Took the top off sanded off the surface rust and sprayed some new prime on it. It will be a few months before I can get it in the body shop so I wanted to make it look a little better for now.

Re: First 72 K5

I had a two ton tree truck pulling a big dump trailer with a skid steer in it get stuck on my street. They where stuck 90 degrees with the road. I did not figure I had a chance pulling them but I wanted to be a nice guy and try. I have to say the old Blazer has some balls and got the job done. Not to mention I had a blast doing it. The guys offered to pay and I said no way. They where as surprised as I was!!! I had it in 4 low with the tires smoking. My wife said my 2 year old was yelling go daddy go! Good Times!

Re: First 72 K5

I am really surprised the tranny held up. It is already in bad shape. The drivetrain is all getting rebuilt minus the motor which is all ready done. This is more then likely the only winter I will get to play like this with it. Once it is all done I don't think I will be able to bring myself to beat on it the way I did today.

Re: First 72 K5

The biggest thing with a K5 is the wheelbase. They sure have enough guts to pull an acre of stumps at one time.
