Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

I apologize for the above post.
These are a few of the pics that were sent to me before I actually saw the truck last year.
I was a decient looking trucks in the photos from what I could tell and I had been wanting another one close to the same year model as the one I used to own about 15 or so years back. It was a 82 gmc seirra classic. And this 83 chevy silverado had the tilt cruise power windows and locks like my other one had and the 4 square headlamps.

sorry about the sideways photos they are straight on my phone but load sideways on here.

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

So I asked them for a few more pics of the engine and the interior.
interior looked to be pretty good. Dash wasnt cracked which was a big thing cause I know they are hard to get. And the engine is a sb 350 followed by a th400 so the owner told me and said it had some work done on the engine.

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

A few more pics I was sent.
guy that owned it said he had sold it to his buddy and then he built the engine and put it in and then he said he bought the truck back from him. So he really didnt know details about the engine build except it was a 350 with aftermarket edelbrock heads, cam, and holley carb.

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

Well I had been looking for one for a while and the ones I had found so far were eat up with rust and this one was in pretty good shape.
He wanted 6k for the truck and I didnt have it so I offered up a trade.
I had a 2010 brute force 750 atv. Sent him a few pics and he liked it and wanted to look at it more and if he liked it we would do an even trade title for title.
a couple pics of the atv.

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

Well loaded the atv up on the car hauler and drove up there to his house.
Looked the truck over. Looked pretty good body didnt have but 3 spots with rust. Didn't notice any oil leaks on engine. Had a dead battery but fired right up with a jump. Sounded damn good big ol lopeing cam in it with headers and some flomasters dumped after the cab. Seen it had a 12 bolt rear and the th400. Rear u joint was broke. Which he told me that a few days before and said he was going to get a new one and put it in. He did but he drove it to the store before I got there to put gas in it so I could drive it around and it broke again.
long I know.. anyways we decided on the trade and I took her home.

The day after all cleaned up

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

It was about a week before I could mess with the truck had to work.
Changed out the battery and cable fixed the jump start problem. Checked ujoint and turned out he was putting the wrong type in it. Needed an inner c clip kind he was putting an outer c clip in it. So that fixed that issue now I could drive it.
Well turned out after a lil trip down the road the drive shaft was bent. Didnt want to wear the bearings in the trans tailshaft or pinion bushings so I parked it.... had to smoke the tires before I did though lol.
Had a brake line lock and a 3200 stall so I had to try it out. I was all grins

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

Started having a plug fouling problem while it was idling ao I adjusted the carb some but it didnt want to adjust correctly. So I took it off figured it needed a cleaning and possibly a rebuild looked pretty old.
well I gor curious as to what I had so I started loooking it up. Lol google is your friend.
turns out I have a holley 4150 850 double pumper. According to holleys website measuring primaries, venturies, and throttle blades.
During the rebuild noticed the shafts were worn pretty good but I finished it anyways so I could put it back on. Has some slop in the linkages and shafts for sure I couldn't get out.

So my buddy had a new carb he bought new about 5 yrs ago and has never been installed on anything asked him what he wanted said ok and sold.

Well me being me im naturally curious. I was wanting to know whats inside this engine.
Best way I could see if it was stock or maybe had a little something in it besides just the aluminium heads on it pull the covers off.
Well it had a decient set of roller rockers under those covers.

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

So I wanted to get it inspected drove it the 2 miles to the little mom and pop inspection station by the house. Wasnt hard on it still has a bent drive shaft. But wanted it inspected cause I was going to get one made in a week or so.
It was running pretty good still had the old 850 carb on it.
Speedo was way off. Th400 28" tires on the back I was running 3200 rpm on the tack around 55 mph on my gps on my phone. Got some gears in the rear end for sure.
anyways on my way back from the inspection the oil pressure dropped about the time I pulled back into my driveway to 10lbs. Had been running around 40-60 psi.
well the oil was black and thin and I havent changed it yet so I figured id give her a change maybe it was just thinned out from the carb flooding before I rebuilt it.
Pulled the plug and metal shavings and chips of metal stuck to the magnetic plug. Damn something is wrong with it.
I figured cam bearings went since the oil pressure dropped.
Well the dipstick was broken on the end of it when I got the truck guy said it was in the old motor and got broke off crank chewed it. The pieces I found on the drain plug were dipstick pieces I pulled out a few when I changed the oil that day. I thought surely they would have cleaned the pan if they swapped the motor.
got to inspecting and apparently somone put a short dipstick tube on the passenger side and shoved a long dipstick down in it And the crank on this engine chewed it up. There were pieces all in the oil pan when I pulled it off.
and that is when it started.
the rest of these pics will be just so I can remember how some things went untill I get to where I am at now.

I hope you fellas werent kidding when you said you like pics in the first couple post

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

Took her down to bare frame blasted painted and putting her back together now.
the pic above is today. This one here was about 2 monin iths ago.
The engine turned out to be a 5.7 vortec 96-00 full roller motor it is currently disassembled in my little shop. Edelbrock e-tec 200 heads, flat top pistons, nice cam was stuffed In it I found the specs on it. Stock bore and stroke block. Needs to be bored over cylinder walls were scroed. The dipstick ate the bearings in the engine when the crank chewed it up and no one got the pieces out of the pan.
Everything is brand new that im going back with on the frame. A arm bushings, 2 1/2 drip spindles, ball joints, calipers, rotors. The rear also got new bushings, a rear disc brake conversion from little shop, has 4.10 gears in the 12 bolt with an eaton locker.

Re: just an old truck I got in a trade

It's funny how "I just need to fix this" turns into a full restoration. Your truck looked pretty good to start with and judging by the last few pics, I think it will be sweet when you are finished. Please keep the pics coming.
