performance exhaust help

Hi all. Long time member, first time poster. I'm looking for opinions on quiet performance exhaust and mufflers. I don't mind the truck getting throaty when I pour the coal to her I just don't want my neighbors windows rattling at 5 am. I have a fresh 350 with thorley headers I'm about to install in my 72 4x4 and I'm hoping for the best of both worlds. Not to loud and good performance. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Dynomax Hemi Turbo mufflers. 2 1/2" in and out in a 20" case. I have them on the Jimmy and they sound great when you're getting on it, and have a near stock sound level at idle. No drone, a great performance muffler. And even better, they are relatively inexpensive.

I'd put them on my Camaro as well if they weren't so darn long!

Re: performance exhaust help

Personally I like to run a single. You could go the dual 2.5s into a flowmaster Y then into a 3'' Magna Flow then out the back 3''

Re: performance exhaust help

I just put some Sumitt brand turbos on my truck I did have a Dyno max on it that lasted about a 1 1/5 yrs. The sumitt brand is the same as a Dynomax a little cheaper also.Have been told the street strip is the same as Flowmasters 40.

Re: performance exhaust help

I put Flowmaster 70 series mufflers on mine (Dual 2.5" dumped before the axle) And I LOVE them. Even with a fairly big cam, they sound mellow at idle and are nice and quite at all different cruising speeds. Never any drone. They are big mufflers, which makes them a tight fit, but worth the effort in my opinion.

Re: performance exhaust help

Installed a 2-1/2" system from the Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers back several years ago on my elephant, that was a mistake, raised the torque range higher than I wanted. I wish I could find the link that stated 2-1/4" is more than enough for a small block chevy and anything more you lose the scavenging effect of the exhaust to work properly. A 2-1/4" pipe will flow 600cfm even with a very large carburetor you would never exceed the capacity of two 2-1/4" pipes...

The stainless 11246 Magnaflows on my truck were installed in 2006. 15,000 miles and 8 years later they still sound the same as they did the day they were finished. No rust, no leaks, no holes. If you have buy new mufflers for 33.00 every 1.5 years you'll spend $330.00 for mufflers for the same time span mine covered. I spent $180.00 for two and they won't need to be changed in the near future. How much is your aggravation and time worth? I would rather be doing something else with my time instead of changing mufflers as regular maintenance.

Re: performance exhaust help

Something is wrong if those mufflers only lasted a year and a half. My Hemi turbos have been on the Jimmy since the last millennium. And they sound and look like they did when they went on except for a gear oil ring from the blankety blank 12 bolt pinion seal that used to be in it...

I have Flowmasters on my Camaro, the first generations ones bought in 1985, and I'm getting ready to put some Magnaflows on my short bed only because I already have them from a parts truck (6" round body) but the answer to quiet power is the Hemi turbo muffler if you have room for the 20" case.

Hey Longhorn, I just installed a new dual exhaust last week (Magnaflow 11256) with x-pipe. It sounds awesome, smooth deep tone at idle and a great rumble when you stomp on it. Like you, I was tired of pissing off my neighbors with the old Flowmaster 40's that were on there before. I also replaced the old headers with straight dump rams horn exhaust manifolds.

Spin tech is the preferred choice for racers here in Arizona. They meet the decibel limits at Firebird (96 dBa at full throttle on the back straight) and are good on the street too! That's quieter than your average blowmaster and yet they still sound sweet!
