Plans have changed! Have some good news, search is down and I have a noob question!

So last May a family friend had some Chevy trucks on his property that he bought and was gonna fix but he didn't. So knowing I follow my dads love for classic cars and trucks he offered me the two trucks a cab and a pile of parts for.....10 bucks! I pounced and started learning all I could on these trucks. Also started gather parts for said truck. Ones a bare stripped cab and 68 clip on a 72 frame and ones a 69/70 fairly complete step. Both are short beds and I also got a 69 GMC cab. My question is this, the pile of parts includes a bunch of fenders doors and a core support. How do I tell this stuff apart from each other? And pics will be added when I get access to a computer. They should be comin home Saturday after next. And I can start bustin out the wasp nests, snakes, bugs and general nastyness. They're crusty rusty and covered in moss and scale. But both are 5 lug trucks and are decent starters. I'm gonna end up selling a bunch of parts and giving him a good share of the profit as a thank you. Also, how do you tell 71-72 grill shells apart? 3-4 of em in the one. Thanks guys, super excited to finally get crackin on this after almost a year of waiting.

Edit: neither have motors or trans. And he thought the one was a 68, the one with title, hence the name. Well after checking the title for me he realized its a 69...so I may need a username change

The core support for a 69+ will have headlight buckets welded to them. 67-68 will be flat in the headlight area, and have a row of 6 bolt holes across the bottom for the splash pan. The fenders for 69+ will have wrinkled metal along the front lip as it rounds down, this area is covered up with the grill. 67-68 fenders will not have any wrinkled metal, they will be smooth because its exposed.

Re: Plans have changed! Have some good news, search is down and I have a noob questio

After what you just said I think the front clip is 69-72 with 67-68 inner grill. The top curve of the fenders have a couple dimples, or after you said that ill call them wrinkles. But the inner grill is definitely a 67-68. There's a few hoods that are included...all 69-72 lol there's a junkyard up the street that they frequented and I think I'll have a walk around there now that I know what to look for, thanks to the mass knowledge base here. Phones data is slowed or id throw a few pics on fb. Thanks Lefty, that cleared it up a bit.

71/72 grilles are the same piece, but the '71s had black accent on the flat after the first step from the outer edge. 69-72 fenders are indented/stepped to accept the grille surround, and under the grille area is where you'll see wrinkles. The 69-72 hood will only come to that stepped area, not the front edge of the fender

Huh. Thanks Lockdoc. I've had the Chevy one screenshotted and saved to my phone since I joined the forum but I'd never seen the GMC one. What was the first year for five-lug front and rear? I think I wanna build the short wide as a 67 Chevy. I have that planned out. Him giving me the stepside threw me a curve though. I wanna go down to the junkyard a couple miles from his house and go through it and see if he has a decent GMC front clip.

In the first picture that grille will not work with that fender/hood setup...

Yeah. Knew that after what y'all said about the wrinkled fenders. If there aren't any 67-8 fenders ima start scourin junkyards for fenders and a hood. Possibly a core support.

I meant to say about the '71 grille accent paint, on most '71 grilles that paint is fded off, so looks the same as '72

Yeah. I may just throw a grill on the yellow one and rock it the way it is, just clean it up a bunch and make it drivable. The blue one though....man its rough lol. Gotta get titles straightened out first of all. I don't wanna sink money and time into a truck and have it not be legal. Gotta get off my ass and subscribe and possibly sell some of the usable stuff. Scrap the other stuff, or make some walhangers.
