What have I got here?

So I bought what I thought was a 68 long bed for either a quick flip or a part out. It definitely has a 68 front clip on it but the cab has a foot emergency brake and the front suspension is different than a 68 should have had. The frame is a rear leaf spring vs trailing arms.

What I don't know is was the truck put on a newer frame or was the front suspension upgraded on a 67 to 72 frame. The lower control arms have pretty deep spring pockets that appear to be unmodified.

So back to my question, is there some ways I can identify what year the frame, cab, front suspension and bed is?

I know pictures will help but I don't have any yet because I just got it home late last night. I will post a few in a day or so.

Please give me some areas to look at or clues to how to determine model years.

Thanks for any help!

Re: What have I got here?

Rubber bushings or screw in on the control arms? Disc brakes or drum brakes? 2 1/4" wide rear leafs or 2 1/2"? 127" wheel base? Stock cab mounts on the frame or fabricated? Bolt holes in ends of cylinder head? Short pump or long pump? Alternator on driver or passenger side?

Please get some pics. This list could go on and on and on...

Re: What have I got here?

Check the VIN on the top of the frame, drivers side, close to where the PS pump is or should be if equipped. Sometimes you have to clean the top of the frame to see it. Does it match the VIN on the door jamb? Sounds like it may have a swapped out front clip or cab.

The foot emergency brake is a 69-72 thing
The leaf spring is entirely possible as some 67-72 Chevy/GMC 2wd and all 4x4's had leaf spring from the factory.

A 34-2714 is a "stock replacement-reproduction" LH Lower control arm from LMC

You beat me to it!

Is the gas pedal attached to the floor, (doesn't look like it) or is it hanging above it?

Re: What have I got here?

Another thing to look for. 71 and 72 cabs have a different VIN tag and a vent above the tag.

The vin is below the vent on the drivers door. It appears that the vin plate may have been moved. I will have to look closer

Re: What have I got here?

So is there a code on the vin tag that identifies the year built like on the new cars? With 12 digits maybe not?

Re: What have I got here?

Here is the deal the way I understand it on the springs[rear] The coils were standard for the Chevrolet's but an option for the GMC's and the leaf were standard on the GMC's and an option for the Chevrolet's. There now is that as clear as mud for every one? Your welcome. The room will stop spinning soon I promise. Jim
