Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

Yep, that's right! I was cruising on craigslist early Saturday morning enjoying some coffee and I a came across an ad for a complete and running short bed stepper..for under $3k...the ad wasn't even 24hrs old yet so I jumped right on it!

Out here in Arizona...you're lucky to even find a short bed for under $4k let alone one that is complete from bumper to bumper and running! Now that I've had two of these trucks already I'm pretty excited to have this one because I have the resources, experience and extra parts laying around.

I was sold on the truck when I saw it was complete with the old wood bed. I never used to like the stepsides as much and when I saw this truck in person, it turns out I really, really like it a lot!

Anyway, just really excited to share my great find and I will be happy to post some progress pictures along the way, I wish I had done that for my 68 454 project...man that was a total re-haul and so much fun. I feel like every time I do something new on these trucks, my skills and confidence in fab work level up. I'll post some bed and interior pics later tonight.

Re: Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

I saw that one too! If I had the Corvette sold was going to pick it up. If I bring another home with no place in the garage to put it, I might be in the garage....or dog house.

Is it as nice as the pics made it look?

There is also a yellow short step on CL in AZ. I think the person that has it has a bunch of older cars listed. For some reason the phone number for them though brings back bad memories.

The truck needs some work here and there, but overall I'm very satisfied with it. Really clean truck, needs body work and some interior, but nothing I can't handle!

Nice truck. Would be better if it were a long bed though.

Re: Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

My plans are to do a 4/6 static drop, add disc brakes, paint a light aqua color with a pearl white roof and I'm going to add the 17" fj cruiser steel wheels for the look that tcb-1 had on his stepper, when he had it. As for the bed I will leave the inside walls and tailgate with the original patina..but add new wood and stainless strips to the floor. stay tuned kids!\

here's SOME pics to show my inspiration!

Re: Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

Put in some overtime on this Sunday. sprayed my first attempt at a faux patina job... I first sprayed a "rust coat" then a black coat to give the "burnt paint look...then I sprayed the top coat.. I'm not finished with the job bu wanted to update how it came out so far... not too bad.. cant wait to buff and work in the "worn spots" for the patina look. I intentionally left a few dents and imperfections on the body in attempt to give a more realistic effect of patina paint and an old look

ohh and I added the fj steelies so now i have a nice set of tires on the truck too

Ok, so now I've started some of the sanding and used my buffer also to get some work effects on this finish.. really starting to like the direction this is going.
