more than one?

How many of you guys have more than one classic truck or car?

In all my searching, I now have a few feelers out and was directed to a listing I really want.......

how long can one sit in the shop before the rust starts to get worse?
What a proper way to prepare the rust areas for a three year store?

Re: more than one?

Oil it up, or remove scale, get clean and juice it up with rust convertor. rust is iron oxide and you need to convert to iron phosphate. It will neutralize it and turn it black. also acts to protect. just keeping it dry inside helps, but I'm sure you have humidity.

And, yes, I have had at least two for as long as I've had vehicles. I've had as many as 15, was at 9 when I joined this board, and have paired it down to two of these trucks, an '85 Jimmy, and my daily driver work truck is a '95 Suburban. Divorce and such dictated paring down, so I'm content with the top dog '72 3/4t 4wd and the li'l '67 shortbed puppy. I sold my last classic car in the mid-90s

Re: more than one?

I am at 5 67-72 'right now not counting parts trucks. I also have a 68 LeMans convertible and a 71 ElCamino that is such a back burner project I keep forgetting I have it sometimes. I also have anywhere from 1 to 7 late model truck and car/SUV wrecks working at a time to rebuild. So I kinda wish body big butted body was stretched as thin as my time is sometimes. Jim

Re: more than one?

I just saw something this week called Gibbs brand penetrating oil that claims to prevent bare metal from rusting for very long periods of time. Don't have a link, just search Gibbs brand and you will find it.

I have three. Which is two too many.

The yellow one was been literally untouched since the mid-90's when it was retired as my daily driver. Being a Minnesota car all its life it had its share of road salt and rust issues. The areas that had rust seem to not have gotten any worse in 20 years of occasional SUMMER drives and nothing else but the occasional start in the winter.

For a three year store I would wash it good, dry it good, and not worry about it. If you plan to use the engine, I would start it every once in a while and let it get up to operating temp before shutting it down again.

Putting oil on problem areas may cause bigger problems down the road when you want to put paint on the vehicle.

Let's just say I have way too many. Some of them sit inside, some sit outside, most run, some don't. I drive all of the ones that run as much as I can. I work on them a lot, almost every day. I don't do anything special when I store them but they don't normally sit for years either.

I have 2 trucks and a camaro. As long as they are in the shop and dry the rust shouldn't get too worst. Put some rust converter on the spots you want to stop.

Re: more than one?

I have two, but I use one for work a lot so I don't count that one. Actually my business owns that one so it barely counts.
Anyway, the older I get, the more I realize that there are plenty of dream cars out there. The more "potential" projects I collect, the less time and money I have for the first one. So now I have one real project, and when that's done I will buy the next one. Until then I don't need the distraction of another.
It's funny that I type that now, cause I almost caved this week, and would have had another project had a board member not jumped on the truck before I could.

72 Blazer, 79 Camaro, 95 Camaro Z28 Convertible. The Z isn't technically a classic, since it's not 25 years old yet, but it's definitely going to be one. I've had to explain to my wife several times why you just don't get rid of a classic, but she's pretty good about it.

Re: more than one?

A vehicle can sit inside and be fine, but moisture in the air of a closed area isn't good. It won't rust like being outside, but even outside it gets dried out quicker. That's why mold can be an issue in buildings with moisture. Oil isn't an issue for later because that area will be replaced and/or solvents get rid of oily residue. I put rust convertor on all sorts of metal items and not only does it neutralize the rust for a long time, it forms a clear barrier, like paint. I have an old tin Chew Mail Pouch thermometer, and various tin signs on my barn I hit once a year and it preserves them well.

Re: more than one?

I have the 3 of my own. I got the Mustang in Sept 2001 and have put maybe 200 miles on it. Bought the turbo Buick in June 2007 and have put around 900 miles on it. Got the C-10 in Oct 2012 and have put maybe 40 feet on it lol.

Plus my wife and her sister started a photography business - so I have a 73 VW Beetle in my yard that they bought as a photo prop and they also have the 59 Apache 31 short stepper that I am about to start tinkering with to make a driver.

My in-laws have a 67 Mustang convert, 77 Chevy short stepper, and a 70 Mustang sports roof.

I'd have more if I had a bigger shop!!

Re: more than one?

I have (2)...my '72 Blue/white and a red/white '66 that I haven't done too much with over the last 5 years although I should post a few pics up.
As for rust prevention...up north the issue of road salt, etc has spawned some very good products that work really well to prevent rust.
I use this product on my truck every year and spray it in the fall prior to storage and I have NEVER had rust come back or creep in on me.
Read up on some of the info...its well worth it in my opinion.
http://www.rustcheck.com/
We can buy it locally at our equivalent of the 'Targe' stores...up here its called 'Canadian Tire'...runs about $6-8 a can and typically use 3 cans a year.
All Good

Re: more than one?

Almost forgot, check out Boeshield T9 for rust prevention. It is made by Boeing for use in aviation. You can buy it in an aerosol and it says it lasts for 1 year. Spray the area and wipe off the excess. I got mine directly through the company.

Re: more than one?

I had a 56 Chevy 4 door in high school. Still have it. Always wanted a 2 door so I bought one. Worked on the 2 door and then all of a sudden my son's (currently 16 1/2 and 15) are close to driving. so bought a 70 C10, a rebuilt it and than bought a 68 k10 currently working on that. no more children so hopefully in a few years I can get back on the 56's
