Opinions on using Rattle Can for TOP of dash

I'd like to hear some opinions about weather or not using rustoleum in a rattle can will hold up for the top of the dash. I am talking abut the area between the dash pad and the windshield. The painter painted it glossy black like the rest of the truck. I talked to them about it and they said, "just spray it semigloss with some rustoleum in a spray can". Which I did. Now, the more I read about the differences in paints, I'm a little worried that I'll have issues using the rattle can. So.... Is this an area where the hardener will really make a difference? I don't have the best paint gun or painting skill, but I could attempt to mix some paint and do it. Right now it looks alright after putting some semi gloss rustoleum from a spray can on it. Honest opinions from both perspectives would be appreciated.

To me its a no wear area except sun. As long as its prepped like scuffed and cleaned good i dont see an issue..

Yeah, I could do that, but I'm at a point where if there is good evidence that I'll have issues with the rattle can, then I COULD make a change now. It would be MUCH MUCH harder to spray on a mixed paint later on when the truck is finished and the windshield is in.

I used satin black Krylon on mine a couple years ago, still holding up fine. I painted it with the windshield in (not fun!)

Re: Opinions on using Rattle Can for TOP of dash

I personally would never do this as the top of the dash is exposed to tremendous sun (UV) rays coming through the windshield. Over time if a paint does not have a lot of UV resistance it will fade, chalk, etc. But, and I do mean but, if the truck will live all of it's life inside of a garage like a lot of show cars do, it would be fine.

I thought about this also. However, would I be correct in assuming that even if I were to mix a valspar type of enamel that it also wouldn't have any UV resistance (any more or less than the rattle can)? The addition of a catalyst and reducer would not give it any UV resistance would it?

Actually the good quality paint products have UV protectant in the paint. Even factory paint after almost 50 years lots of it look somewhat good. Rattle can, 50 years?
But hey, do what you want. Your truck.
U asked for opinions,
all I said was "I would not do it". That's it.

Re: Opinions on using Rattle Can for TOP of dash

I used rustoleum sold in a pint paint can (black); and I applied it with an applicator while I was putting in a new dash pad. Have not noticed it since. My windshield was in and I could not see trying to spray it.

Who cares if it fades some, you want that area anti reflective anyways. I wouldn't worry about it at all. It holds up just fine outside too.

If you want it flat black just sand it with 2500 grit to take away the shine.

Re: Opinions on using Rattle Can for TOP of dash

I'll be attempting to paint mine with rattle can this Saturday. Went down to the paint shop and they mixed me up a can or stock 526 poly gold so hopefully everything will match or I'll shoot the whole interior. It;s stripped down anyway for a tank/carpet.

NAPA will mix your paint and put it in a spray can for ya. pretty expensive, but for a small job it might be the way to go.

This is the proper way for those at this stage of paint. I wet sanded mine to take the shine off, looks perfect, quick and easy.

Re: Opinions on using Rattle Can for TOP of dash

I painted mine with the same gloss paint that I used for the steering column to match my dash pad, took the gloss of with fine (I don't remember what grit) paper, and then coated it with Rustoleum flat clear coat.
Looks great after 2 years.
