Should I remove SPID for paint or paint around it?

As the title says, should I remove SPID for paint or paint around it?

If it's in good shape leave it be and paint around it.

Re: Should I remove SPID for paint or paint around it?

My SPID was painted over and destroyed. It is a '69 C10 so it didn't have the clear film over the SPID like the newer trucks have. We "think" it is an original 396 truck as the engine numbers indicate it is a '69 engine, however the truck was redone years ago as a nice truck, not something restored to original.
There is a member on this site that reproduces SPIDS in their original text and font, so if you remove yours for a good paint job, you can always obtain a new clean replacement.

Re: Should I remove SPID for paint or paint around it?

I would leave it on if it's readable, especially if numbers still match etc.

My question would be, how to best protect it? Paint clear over it?

Protect it and paint around it.

I don't know your truck but if you want to keep the SPID original and do a decent paint job you can take your glovebox door off and keep it like it is, get another one from the parts board, strip it, paint it and have CHIPFLYER remake you a new SPID. That way you can always show folks the original if the need arises.

Re: Should I remove SPID for paint or paint around it?

I plan on removing my glove box door (with correct and original SPID) and archive it. Get a replacement, paint it, and acquire a reproduction SPID, so everything looks spiffy.

This is actually what I did, but not really by choice, my original one looked like it had been removed and set outside for years, then reinstalled (not by me) and was in bad condition, so I replaced it with a nice used one and new SPID.

My truck had 2 options, a heater and blue vinyl interior.

I so wish I was a little wiser in my youth and did this. This is the way to go IMO.

No offense intended to anyone, but if it were mine, I'd tape it off and paint around it if it's legible. They are only original once.

Re: Should I remove SPID for paint or paint around it?

Anyone know where to locate these clear SPID covers? Also, can these be removed without ruining the SPID? The corner on mine is bad. I'd like to either remove and recover, or cover the cover. Thanks

Most of the originals I've seen are rough all around the edges from plain wear and tear, but that is also a type of "survivor patina". I have not heard of anyone successfully removing one.

I may have to accept the "survivor patina"...It's really not bad. Note I "may" have already tested to see if it would come off. No damage, but I think that's the end of it. A few small corner pieces are in order.
