Front hubs

Has anyone ever used the front hubs from a drum 6 lug truck to build a trailer with? I'm wanting to build a light(2500#) or so trailer and use the front hubs and an extra set of Rallye wheels on it. I'm trying to not have to carry a trailer spare, so I already know that I will be way overboard on tire but I prefer the look and like I say, I don't want to have to carry a separate spare. Axle choice etc would be great info.

Re: Front hubs

The 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern was once very common for trailers like my 68 four horse Miley. As far as specific axles or what hub to use I can't help other than to suggest looking about at e-trailer. http://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trai...and_Drums.aspx
In the end you might be cheaper using an off the shelf hub, electric brake and axle asembly than trying to make parts work. Still use your wheels though. After all most places want brakes on a trailer above 1500lb. Unless of course you were thinking surge brakes with the existing Chevy hardware. If so press on! :-)
Matching rally wheels on a trailer can really tie things together. Not having to carry an extra spare is good but a trailer mounted second spare is easier to get to on that poorly lit roadside that somehow seems inevitable.

Re: Front hubs

the only problem I see is a hub replacement in the future or on the road. I would stick with standard trailer hubs just incase a wheel bearing wipes one out while on the road.

Re: Front hubs

So the Rallye wheels will work with the 6 lug trailer hubs? I don't have to worry about accessing the spare since it's a Panel, it's right inside the right rear door. And I have a light.
When I looked(didn't measure my tape was missing from my pocket) the 6 lug trailer hubs looked bigger that the center hole.

Re: Front hubs

The heavier trailers use the same 6-lug pattern, but usually with 16" diameter. Alignment would be the toughest part of using front truck hubs. Grease bearings and they should last forever.
