Box For 86 SWB

I might swap th bed on my 86 SWB. Does anyone know what years I should be looking for? I would like one that is exactly like the 86. Thank you for your response.

Re: Box For 86 SWB

Is your bed a dual tank? If so, you need a 79-87 dual tank bed. 79 was first year for the square gas door. If your truck is a single tank, then you need a 81-87 bed. 81-87 single tank beds have the gas door on the driver side and 79-80 single tank beds have the gas door on passenger side. All 73-78 have round gas caps with no door.

1978 was first year for square fuel doors. They are getting crazy in price around here. On CL a guy around here is parting out an 85/86 C-10 truck, Colorado rust free for $1250 w/tailgate. Crazy.

Incorrect. Fuel doors started in 1979. My 1978 has both fuel doors but it is an 86 box.

You could talk to this guy. He's got maybe a couple hundred beds, different years, different configurations, rust free, in Northern Illinois.

Re: Box For 86 SWB

Mine is a single tank with the door on the passenger side. So is the concensus an 81-87? Are they the same in every detail including the tail gate? Thanks as always for the help.

No, I meant to say the gas door was on the drivers side.

Re: Box For 86 SWB

The biggest difference within that scope of years is the presence/absence of trim.

Thanks Rich. Mine is a Custom Deluxe so I have no trim. Thanks again.

Re: Box For 86 SWB

I believe in 1984 (I might be wrong-heck I thought 78 was the first square fuel door year lol) GM began using a galvanized bed floor so the later ones are the ones to get.
