700r4 Lockup Solenoid vacuum switch

700r4 Lockup Solenoid vacuum switch

Hey guys, I have a 1986 Burb 350sb 700r4 trans
just did an intake carb swap, headers dual exhaust in very near future.
So no emissions crap, took it all off as well as all vac lines except vac adv for dist and power brakes.
Never had a 700r4 before. I got the proper bracket for the TV cable and throttle linkage part to correctly hook the
TV cable to the edelbrock carb and adjusted it. Everything runs and shifts perfect around town for the test drives I have given it.
Now I just need to hook up the lockup solenoid. I have the factory harness plugged into the trans it comes up to the engine and plugs into a vac switch that has two vac ports on it.
Can I hook this vac switch up and have this work as it did from the factory? or do I have to buy some kinda aftermarket lockup kit???
Thanks in advance for your response...

PS what happens if I do not hook up this lock up switch? can I damage the trans? what is the purpose of the lockup switch? does it just lock up at highway cruising speeds? only in OD? new to the 700r4 so forgive my ignorance :P always had either a 4 speed manual or a turbo 350

Re: 700r4 Lockup Solenoid vacuum switch

Might have answered my own question so I will post what I found out today.
Did some asking around and some google searches.
I talked to a guy from Mad Dog Transmissions in GA Great guy, very helpful. Could have easily said I needed to buy something and try to sell me but he did not.
He said unless I was really concerned about highway fuel economy and or had a really revving rear end gear 4.11 4.56 etc that I did not need to have the lockup hooked up. I have 2.73 rear gears in my Burb so I really have no use for dropping rpms at highway speeds anymore than I already do when I'm in OD
So with that said I'm leaving it unhooked

PS Anyone near Hagerstown MD 21740 have a good rear for my 86 Burb with 3.73 gears?

There's a good write up HERE on hooking it up with factory parts. I think I'd hook it up just because, you know?

Sound like you already have an aftermarket unit. TCI I think. So long ago when I got mine. Still works great. Locks up a clutch in the torque converter kinda making it like a manual trans.
