2017 HRPT in a 72 Super with my wife and sons

Hey I'm Craig. I don't post a lot but learn a lot about these trucks on here.
At the recommendation of a member, Chevyland, I am posting about our journey on the 2017 Hot Rod Power Tour.
My wife and two sons are going with me. This will be my 7th Long Haul but the first in the truck. My youngest son has a 1980 Mercury Bobcat wagon he has raised from the dead and will make it's maiden voyage also. We had a nice write up on Roadkill about the vehicles... http://www.roadkill.com/rk-nation-cr...-bobcat-wagon/

Re: 2017 HRPT in a 72 Super with my wife and sons

The truck has been a great but it needed a little TLC before the journey. For those not familiar with the HRPT, it is a road trip of a couple thousand hot rods travelling to seven cities in seven days. They try to keep the route off the interstates and more on back roads of this great US of A. I have done the tour many times but his will be the first for the truck. Over the years I have replaced all the brakes, the rear axle, carb, HEI and other mechanical repairs. Recently I added a sliding rear window and a toolbox to lock up our stuff. The truck is a non-AC truck so the slider will help with the heat on the road trip. The ignition switch tumbler was shot and we started it with a screw driver. My wife was worried about it getting stolen so I bought a new tumbler as as door locks (didn't work either) and a glove box lock. So it's ready to be more secure on the trip! I also needed to put a new exhaust on it. It was full of holes and local trips were not bad but a long haul could have been a little too much fumes. So the truck is ready to roll. Oil changed, new fuel filter, tank sending unit (that didn't work either) and new wiper blades to make the trip a little easier. We leave a week from Friday for KC. I'll post some pics and updates as we go if anyone is interested.

Re: 2017 HRPT in a 72 Super with my wife and sons

Tarafied1 - I like the name. Guess that makes me Alice-fied...

This run sounds like a blast. Is there a website that I can look into. Wouldn't be able to make it this year, but probably could for next year. Ever since my oldest was killed in a bike wreck, my wife doesn't like me to ride any more so Sturgis has been off the table. However for this, my youngest can drive the truck and I'll take the 69 Vette. We might let Alice come...

Please do post some pic's. It would be great to see what it is like.

Yes post as many pics as you can, that trip should be a blast!

You have met Freiburger and Finnegan? They seem like good guys on RK, imagine in person would be the same.

I may run the leg from Newton, Iowa to Davenport, Iowa since I live half way between the two. If anyone wants my phone number for a contact in that area PM me. I have all the tools and a trailer.

Re: 2017 HRPT in a 72 Super with my wife and sons

Thanks everyone.
I will post as many pics as I can! And yeah, I have met Finnegan and Freiburger a few times. They are very cool guys. My son has been influenced by them very much and they signed his glovebox. I have a picture of David in my Mustang.
Alice-fied is a good one! I always introduce my wife as Tara and then say I am Tara-fied. She didn't used to like it but 22 years and she is getting more comfortable with it!
I will be looking for the other C10 and classic Chevy's on the road, if you see me, stop me and say hi! Especially if I am on the side of the road! Lol.

Hey Craig,
I'm glad you started your thread.
I've never heard of the power tour until you mentioned it in the Super thread.
I'll have to put it on my bucket list.
I think you will have fun posting the trip.
It is so cool you are sharing it with you family.

Whenever I do these sort of things, and run a blog on it, I engage in the moment more. The bonus is, you then have it documented to look back at.

Sounds like you have the truck all prepped to go.

When My son and I did our 72 Super Roadtrip-coast to coast
we did the same thing. Tool box in the back of the bed, and no a/c

Have fun, and keep the post coming!!

Re: 2017 HRPT in a 72 Super with my wife and sons

Thanks! cool picture. And wow coast to coast!?! That would be awesome!
The Hot Rod Power Tour started about 20 years ago. It has grown to 5000 plus cars/trucks and people from many different countries. It is 7 cities in 7 days roughly 200 - 300 miles a day on back roads thru small towns. It is a different route, cities every year. It's like a parade, people line the streets in the towns and on over passes and put signs up. It's great!
Here is a link to the 2017 tour to give you an idea

Re: 2017 HRPT in a 72 Super with my wife and sons

We drove drove through some of those same places on our trip!
Bowling green has the Corvette museum. That we visited.
If you are in Iowa, and have time, check out the Iowa 80 truck museum
Someone on our trip chimed in. And told us to check it out. WOW

I'll watch for the cities the power tour hits next year

cool thanks for the tip
They typically start the next year where they ended the previous year so we pretty much know it will start in Bowling Green

I was going to try to do the first half of HRPT, but I'm just going to Newton for this year. I'll probably take my 72 there and maybe my Corvette. Have a fun and safe trip!

that's a great description! I feel the same way about mine, it is really rusty but solid enough to just drive it. Ihe only body panel with no dents or rust is the hood! Mechanically it's pretty worn but reliable.
I can't wait to hit the road this Friday to drive up to Kansas City. I will try to post a lot of pics!

I have been reading your build thread of the Longhorn, wow! I am only half way through but awesome build. You mentioned maybe selling engine mounts for he Cummins swap, I'd love to do that to mine. Anyway, I will keep my eye out for you in Newton
