1970 Disc Brake Conversion - Front Brake Lines

Hi - When i convert to discs in the front. What do i need to do to convert the front brake lines? I currently have power drums and am going with a scarebird kit.

I know i'll need a new master and i already have a CPP combo valve left over from a power booster addition on a square body (didn't need the combo valve).

What about the brake lines. Will I be running two new ones from the combo valve and a new one to join the rear brake line?

Also, can I route the rear brake line a different way that doesn't involve it wrapping around the frame and being close to the headers?

Thanks in advance for the guidance. I want to do it once and do it right. I don't care about putting 71/72 lines on there as they appear to only use one of the combo valve ports and split somewhere.

I'm not even sure you need new lines, though the master cylinder changes so you might have some line fab there.

Otherwise as I recall there's a line runs behind the rear crossmember that connects to the junction block and go to each side, where it ends up connecting to the flex hoses. So it might all just stay the same for discs, at least that crossover might.

Take a look at this thread. I posted part numbers for the front brake hoses:

Thanks. Will I need to move the brackets for the brake hoses to the other side of the cross member or leave it all like it is? I believe the calipers will be on the rear of the wheel.

I didn’t move the brackets on my 68. Everything went together nicely.

Re: 1970 Disc Brake Conversion - Front Brake Lines

I purchased the CPP brake line kit for my 70 C10. It was nice because it used the disc diameter lines plumbed in the original drum line locations. I wish it would've included new mounting hardware though.

Heads up on the CCP prop valve, get yourself the plastic knob tool that goes in where the brakes switch goes, you need to keep that prop valve from moving when you are bleeding,I found out the hard way, when the valve moves when bleeding you will have a terrible time to bleed, google it up.

Re: 1970 Disc Brake Conversion - Front Brake Lines

demian5, your signature says you also have an '86. What do you think of that arrangement with the Combination Valve mounted on the cross member under the radiator?
Check the brake line on both vehicles for an inline coupler on the passenger side frame, under the cab. '73 and up brake lines from the coupler forward would be a direct, bolt in swap.
I used C20, '76 brake lines, Combination valve, flex lines, calipers, spindles, "A" arms and MC in my 3/4 ton '67 and it was a simple bolt-in operation.

I can go to any parts store and get brake parts for a '76 3/4 and I know everything will fit.

The brake lines go through the frame rail, just ahead of the suspension.
THE HOLE FOR THE BRAKE LINE WAS ALREADY THERE IN THE CORRECT SPOT. The hole had to be drilled to a larger size, but the brake lines lined up with it perfectly.
The combination valve is mounted with two bolts. One hole was already there.

I don't know if the pre-73, 1/2 ton already has those holes like the 3/4, but I would sure take a look.

Thread after thread, I see guys using a combination of after-market and pre-73 parts.
Why won't this or an other part fit and why is the brake hose too short or too long?

Re: 1970 Disc Brake Conversion - Front Brake Lines

Richard J

Ive had a few square bodies and love the combo valve location but not enough to put it all on my 70.

Im using the scarebird brackets because I can use 1995 heavy half ton (7600 GVW) 6-lug rotors and calipers in my 15x8 disc brake wheels. I can go to the parts store as well and buy pads, etc...

Another member mentioned that 69 Chevelle brake hoses work great and go to the existing bracket for the line/hose.

I'll keep everyone posted. Found out the master on the drum setup is internally leaking so ill fix that now and stock up on the disk brake parts.
