Chevy 305 heads

I am looking for some 416 heads to put on my 307. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Been looking on CL and eBay but not much luck. Or if anyone has suggestions on any different heads to put on it let me know.

Unless you are having valve issues with your 307 engine, then you are about as well off keeping what you have. It will take more than a head swap to wake up a 307. There may be some, not much, benefit in finding a set of 1971 or later 350 heads. That way you don't have to put hardened seats in them and you get a little bigger intake and exhaust valve. Headers, aluminum hi-rise and a good carb breather setup might net you a few hp. Trouble is, all that cost a good deal of cash and you just spent it on a not so desirable displacement engine. I guess you could then find a good 327 or 350 short block and build it in the wings and transplant all that on to your new short block.

Oh ok. I have heard to change the heads cam intake and carb and it would beef it up a good bit from what it is.

Wonder how much you would have to spend on the alum heads. I see them for 600 on up on Ebay. I guess it all depends on your sentimental attachment to your 307. If you do hop it up, then let us know how it turns out.

I would never ask that. The 307 has gotten a bad rap over the years for being an oddball low hp engine. JGarrett, I have 2 daily drivers with 305 engines and both are reliable motors. Neither one will run a hole in the wind but they do their job. I have had my share of 307 engines in the classics too. My 1st 68 c10 had one. I replaced it with a 350 4bbl and was happier with it. I would like to see you gain HP from yours and it will be interesting to see what combo you end up with. Keep us posted.

Ok to each is own! I just never see the point. Cost just as much to build a 350 and results are much better even in mild hp form.

I have a set of 416 heads that I will give you. Shipping might kill the deal tho.Nothing wrong with a 307. Not every vehicle on the road needs an LS or a crate 350

most people who bad mouth the 307 dont understand what that combo is for. and yest it does have performance potential. dollar for dollar a 350 is the way to go but NOT because there is anything wrong with a 307.

Most people build the 307 because they already have one or so they can say they have something different.

I go for best engine combo for the dollar. If you want a smaller displacement then op for a Chevy 302 or 327.

305/307 engines are junk in my opinion.

Had a bone stock 307/PG in a '68 Malibu (before my ex decided to go-on-green before the guy in front of her went). Even tired and eating oil, that motor would bark the tires shifting from Lo to Hi. When the car got munched, I sold the engine, a decision I have come to regret.

I have no love for a 305, but I will take a 307 any day of the week.
