Would I regret removing my rear passthrough window?

I'm mulling over my plans for my pickup. I plan to fancy up the interior a good amount and while I like my rear passthrough window it will stick out like a sore thumb with the more modern and sporty looking interior I am planning. It is a simple passthrough with a raw aluminum frame. It works fine, it just looks clunky and old. I don't see any options out there for a better and more modern looking passthrough window so I will probably just replace it with a normal solid glass window. The truck has and AC so cooling and comfort won't be an issue. About the only time I ever use the window is to open it a crack while having the vents open to get some air flow without the noise of the side windows being open. Although since much of the year in my area is either too cold or too hot for that air flow to be enough for comfort, I'm thinking I won't miss it much.

But, sometimes the old saying, "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" holds true.

Simple enough to just reinstall if you end up missing it.
Maybe anodizing or paint the aluminum frame if you would like to change it’s look.
Hope you find your happiness.

Re: Would I regret removing my rear passthrough window?

The color isn't the entirety of the issue, the frames around the window and around the sliders are all very wide. With the sliders closed, it really does block a portion of the rearview view, something I've never been happy with. If someone made a modern one like in new trucks with frameless sliders it would be ideal, but alas.

Re: Would I regret removing my rear passthrough window?

Only you know how much you actually open and use that window. If it's reasonably often, keep it. But it sounds like your HVAC needs are well covered with the AC so if it messes up the clean lines of your work, ditch it.

Re: Would I regret removing my rear passthrough window?

I'm also actually going to improve the HVAC system and so should have more control on air flow and temps so the passthrough will become more unnecessary I would think. Right now I have the original heater and a completely separate under dash AC unit. It cools really well, but I don't have any way to blend air or modulate temps on cooler days with a lot of sun. I'm also going to go with gray tinted windows so things should improve in many ways before I'm done.

Anyone want to buy a used passthrough window! I think I've convinced myself I'll be happy without it.

IMO the solid window looks better, but I like to drive with my windows down and the slider cuts down on the wind in the cab.

Re: Would I regret removing my rear passthrough window?

I have the slider back glass and plan on keeping it, but my truck will be setup as fairly traditional, 2wd with 1" body lift, will have 15 or 16 rims with fat sidewalls, moderate side mirrors, nothing shaved or chopped, heavy bed rails, plenty of trim, ect. I rarely will use the slider, but I like the looks to me.

If your truck is lowered, shaved, bumpers tucked, trim-less, tinted windows, etc. then by all means lose the bold back glass and get sporty! You won't miss the rattles and air leaks that's for sure.

I'm in the same situation. I'll be removing both front and rear glasses to replace the roof. I plan to put in the original solid glass from the donor cab when finished. I'll also be adding AC at some point so I don't think I'll miss the slider.

I don't have a slider, but don't find the wind noise is that bad. Are most sliders aftermarket? They all seem to be slightly different.

Re: Would I regret removing my rear passthrough window?

I'm in the opposite boat.
I've got my original (a/c-tinted) back glass in my truck but I've had a really nice, factory tinted slider unit kicking around for a couple of years and have wrestled with whether I want to install it or not.
I had one before and don't recall it really being an advantage one way of the other.

...maybe I'll just sell it off, lol.

Re: Would I regret removing my rear passthrough window?

I've sold enough spare junk around here recently that I should be able to buy my AC upgrade components pretty soon, in time for a Spring project at least. I won't be doing the rear window until later when I get deeper into the make-it-shiny part of the project so I guess I'll be able to see if I can live without the slider given how the new HVAC works.

I have a black framed with smoked glass you can have. Just pay shipping. It came off my 70 GMC twenty years ago and have been in inside storage since then.

I am interested in the slider if Rich69shortfleet is not. I have a US mailing address.

Re: Would I regret removing my rear passthrough window?

I like sliders and wing windows. They are part of the reason I like the old trucks. Timeless.

But if you are going to really modern up the truck so basically its just the sheet metal that stays the same Id say go with the plain glass. Over mixing of cool old stuff with really modern has a flow problem ... IMO of course =)

I miss sliding windows , when some leaves were in the bed swirling around & a random leaf would fly in and get ya.

If FREE ends up being too much money for Gillnetter, let me know, I think I can afford that....
