Time to let go!

A while back I had to make some hard decisions.I had too many classics and too few funds to build them all. I will be retiring soon and although I will have some money coming in it will not be enough to indulge in lots of old cars. Out of what I had I chose to keep my '68 C-20. It was practical and I love the way it looks. So I pulled out the 327 engine and TH-350 trans from my car and made the truck dependable. Time to let go!

Yes, I am keeping the truck. The car is going to my oldest Son and he will make it into something great.

Never easy to let one go when you really don't want to. Nice to give to your son, he'll cherish that old Olds.

Re: Time to let go!

I know how you feel. Been doing the same thing over the last 10-12 years. I would have kept the truck too. They are more than a cool vehicle, they make you less dependent, save you money, a totally versatile, and you can always use them to make you money.

I figured in my retirement is when I'd have the time and this is exactly how I wanted to spend it, along with my other interests. For me it was refinancing my wife's ridiculous debt into this house, her leaving soon after, spending up her retirement from the state (I was entitled to 1/2 of) just as the construction industry collapsed as a prelude to the stock market fail during the great recession. A triple whammy of reality hit me up the side of my head. I'm self employed and my retirement was in my hands and it all got turned upside down just as I was ready to get out of the siding and exterior trim business, sell both houses and semi-retire on a nice place with natural surroundings. I had 30 years of collecting to get rid of and supplement my income through it all. Still have the house, the debt, working hard, and I kept a '72 3/4t 4wd and a '67 shortbed 2wd to have first and last year versions from opposite ends of the spectrum. I am good with that, but sure was a hard thing to do and I'd never have sold anything if I didn't have to. It's nice to have less to worry about with ethanol, batteries, and short term rubber tires they sell these days. I'm just glad I didn't listen to the critics who saw no value in what I was spending my money on when I had it. It was all money in the bank when things got rough.

Re: Time to let go!

Special-K, I know all about best laid plans! All we can do is all we can do.I will be working even after I retire because my retirement check will be about $1,000.00 a month. Just going to sell my house and move to an area where property is cheap and hope for the best. My son is an ace mechanic and does LS swaps on the side. He will have the Olds up and running before the 4th of July.

Re: Time to let go!

Very nice. I'm sure it was a tough decision, but it was a good one IMO.

Re: Time to let go!

I am having a similar struggle, with my 69 C10 and my 71 Cutlass. Not enough money or time to go around. Good luck to you.

Re: Time to let go!

I too know how you feel. When I retired three years ago, I sold my '63 Nova Convertible and '73 Camaro. The trucks are just easier to get in and out of. Tough choice, nice truck! Enjoy.

Re: Time to let go!

Sorry, I'd have kept the Cutlass, assuming both were in similar condition, but it's not my decision so good for you!

Re: Time to let go!

70Shorty, If I was staying in North Texas I would keep the Cutlass too. I'm going where they have forestry roads and low water crossings so the Cutlass was not a good fit. We want a small fixer upper house on 3 to 10 acres in the Ouachita Forrest.Closest town has 5,000 people. We traveled there in the Cutlass pulling a 50's camper and when we went out to sight see the headers would drag from time to time.I plan to paint my pickup to match the camper.
