clear seat covers

How many of you remember those clear protective seat covers used back in the 60s? Dealers would install them to protect the actual seat covers from stain and wear. Then some one said "well who are you saving those seats for anyway?" Back then there weren't many air condition equipped vehicles and that plastic sure made you sweat. Sit on those things for a while and the back of your legs looked like waffles.
I sure don't miss those things.

Grandma's cars all had them. Most uncomfortable things ever invented

Re: clear seat covers

Then there were those wire mesh or plastic mesh deals for driver comfort. It allowed some air to move between the driver and those vinyl seat covers.
Fast forward some 60 years and some cars have heated AND cooled seats. Yeah. Ain't technology something?

Re: clear seat covers

For the who are so anal about neat (or wear) that they can convince themselves they aren't uncomfortable I always hated them. Rip them right out. I had a '71 SWB K/10 Custom Deluxe that had one covering the blue cloth seat. Funny thing was, on the driver side where the concern for wear is, the cover had worn through and the seat looked just as bad as as any other I had seen...worn through with foam worn off. Just the bottom, but the back was grungy dirty. If you could cut it in half the passenger side looked brand new. Someone road all those miles in discomfort to end up with a seat that needed the same work as one that never had a cover.

A guy I worked for bought a brand new '78 F100. One of the guys said "You better get a plastic cover if you want to keep that seat nice". The boss said "I bought the truck new, I'll wear it out. Why save the seat for the next guy who buys it once I've worn the whole thing out?". And you should have seen the 73/74 he had also bought new. You'd think he had lowered it if you saw it. That truck was plum tuckered out!

Re: clear seat covers

If I recall correctly, the clear plastic covers were sold by Fingerhut. The company is still in business, but I don't see any of the clear covers on their website. I never had any of those, but I always used, in any vehicle I owned with vinyl seats, one of those L-shaped "cushion" deals with small coil springs wound in circles and covered with a coarse mesh-like material that covered both surfaces of the seat. In fact, I think I threw away the last one I had when I started my restoration in 2010. I always kept it tucked away behind the driver's side bucket seat. My 2015 Chevy dually has the heated and cooled seats mentioned in a post above. They are great.

Did I just show my age again?????

Re: clear seat covers

Yep, my first car 1960 Ford had those when I bought it used in 1965. I took them off as soon as I got the car home. The cloth seats were perfect. As it turned out that was the only thing on that car that was decent.

Re: clear seat covers

My aunt had those diamond pattern clear covers on all her Chrysler Imperials from the early '60's on. Nothing like seeing a white car with white seats covered in clear plastic. Even her white with Red Imperial had the clear covers on them,,,,plus her "formal" living room seating surfaces were covered the same way. That living room was for show only....no one was ever permitted to go in that room - she even had a rope blocking accidental entrance to that room.

Re: clear seat covers

My mom bought a demo 59 white chevy Impala with blue seats and clear seat covers. When I started to drive in 62 I remover the covers and the seats were perfect.

Re: clear seat covers

They served there purpose

After 40 years
The upper seat was basically brand new
The lower seat had been removed at some point, so it had a bit of wear

Re: clear seat covers

That's a real nice upper seat back you've got there.
