How much is the space between ....

Hi:
I am in the process of installing an under the bed gas tank in to my 53 GMC 3/4 project. My bed is in pieces right now. Can you tell me how much is the space from the top of the frame rail to under the bed? Is it just the height of under the bed crossmembers which seat on the frame rails? I want to know how far up I can push the tank.
Thanks

I plan to go side fill. I bought the tanksinc universal one which has the option of side fill and top fill.

Re: How much is the space between ....

if you have the spacer blocks, set the blocks on the frame rail in the right spots and lay the front and rear cross sills on the and lay a straight board or length of metal on them front to rear near the middle and then figure out how far down the end of the bolts that hold the metal strips and bedwood in are going to stick down below the bed and give yourself enough clearance there. you also have to clear that next to the rear bed sill.

Re: How much is the space between ....

Fitting the tank can be a really critical first step. I had a different frame but squeezing in a blazer tank required at least 2" above the rails and removing some material from the bed sides under the fender. It was such a critical deal I used solid delrin blocks to adjust bed height up and leave room for side filler and breather hose. That really set the height for rest of truck including cab and front end.
