Question Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

So I finally found myself an aluminum sliding window down in Houston for a $150.00. Plans are to make the drive down on Saturday to pick it up. The seller has a 72 C20 that was Blue and repainted it White, then ended up replacing the aluminum one with a new black one. His truck's SPID was missing and doesn't know it the slider is factory or not. Later this evening he'll be sending me an inside photo but from the outside it appears in good shape. He says he wouldn't have replaced it if he didn't like the black one he saw on another truck better.

So, I have a Cheyenne with SS Trim on the back solid window. I know I can get a seal that can either allow me to keep/reuse my trim or not. I assume everyones recommendation is to get Precision seal. The running consensus is from the factory SS Trim was no installed with Sliders (only perhaps from the dealer or post sell add-ons).

So, I am throwing this up as a poll to see what you peeps think - keep the SS Trim with the Slider or not?

Love to see good photos of SS Trim and the aluminum sliding window for those that voted yes ;-)

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

I'm all about a lot of trim and not so much about OEM/factory/dealer options, so keep the trim around the slider. It will make the installation more difficult, but definitely worth the extra effort and time. I even polished the back side of my slider for extra brightworks...

If you still have the SS trim on the front I would keep the Stainless trim.

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

Yes, I have all my original trim :-)

I just ordered the seals (for trim and not) from Summit. Crazy how much cheaper they are on Summit than ordering from Precision directly - which is why didn't mind ordering both seals. Also got all the tools as in Precision's YouTube video, though that video is for solid back glass. The little Windshield Stick I did have to get from Precision, Summit didn't carry that. I even have some of Precision's lubricant already in "stock" for door seals I installed last year.

I suppose one thing is... will the SS trim come off without getting mangled.

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

Talked to a local window installer a bit ago, they were recommended by my auto shop for classic vehicles windows. He seemed to be very knowledgeable, though he was not really positive about reusing the old SS trim and wanted me to buy new. He said too many times pulling off the old trim from classic vehicles has resulted in it getting messed up to many times or clasps broken. So to avoid pissed off clients, he requires new trim or the client pulls it themselves.

I really don't want to pre-buy new SS trim. Pretty sure you have to pull the window to get the SS Trim off. This is one of the reasons why I got both seals for "just in case".

Anyways ... how likely would the trim be reusable or not?

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

I have no experience with this situation, but perhaps you could use a blade/utility knife to cut away the parts of the seal holding the trim, making the extraction easier? You're already planning to replace the seal anyhow, so no loss there. And trim ain't cheap, so well worth the attempt. I would think with patience, and the right approach you could save that trim...
Good luck!

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

You can reuse both the front and rear glass SS trim ALL DAY LONG...so long as the glass, gasket, and trim are removed at the same time (whether it is removed with the gasket intact or the gasket is cut from the inside). The trim does not want to be removed by itself. I would wonder if your glass man has ever done one of our trucks before because the aftermarket glass trim does not have the best reputation for fitting well.

The key to reusing the trim is that the installer knows how to do it and do it right. If they loose their patience during the install and start pushing or beating on the trim...then they dent it from the outside.

I suggest you sand any scratches out of your trim before removing it and polish it up real nice.

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

He very well may have been generally speaking about classic auto trim and not directly about a 67-72 C10 Truck.

I do expect the whole rear window to be removed, using the cut method (that seems to be the easiest). Now when the glass is out, the SS Trim still on - I'd assume there is a proper way to remove it? Do you remove the little joint covers first?

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

The gasket will easily fold open and release the trim whether its been cut or not. The leg of the trim is "L" shaped and fits in an "L" shaped groove in the gasket. In fact, you may want to tape the trim to the gasket in several places prior to removal to keep it from just falling out. Not likely, but it could happen...it's not hard to get it out of the gasket. Don't remove the joint covers until that joint is out of the gasket or until the all trim pieces have been taken out of the gasket...once again some tape across the covers will help hold it all together especially if your working by yourself.

I vote no trim, like the factory did it. I feel like the stainless trim, and the stainless window frame are too much together

"though he was not really really positive about reusing the old SS trim and wanted me to buy new."

That's crazy. Obviously they know little about the aftermarket trim fitment. However, I am confident the back window trim fits better than the front.

I with help and little experience managed to get my back glass in. I did assemble the trim and glass and let it set for a week.

If you want the trim polished do it while it is still installed. Less likely to damage it. Suggestion from on of the board members. Grumpy old man?

Back glass it a walk in the park compared to the front.

I like no trim better but trim still looks pretty good.

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

Mostly agree with some that the trim with the aluminum window frame is a bit much. One of the reasons my rear window is not installed yet, other than not using the slider is I have been toying with the idea of shooting window frame white like the cap and running the trim.

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

Interesting Louisvillekytruck that you brought it back to the top LOL

My Summit order comes in today, I just love it when things ship out of Irving Texas, I get it the next day. Heck I even added to my order the hood/cow seal to get free shipping (which more or less cover that seal). The little nylon sticks I got from Precision.

But as luck has it, the rear seal for SS Trim is backordered from Summit and I'll likely not have it until early Feb. So I am mulling over pulling the window out myself and just using the regular non-trim seal for the slider. I have bought all the tools, minus suction cups and perhaps I can get it in with some help. Though I wished I had some of those suction cups... anyways if I install it without the SS Trim after I get the slider from Houston, I can do the trim version later once I get the backordered seal.

So interesting poll update as of this posting no SS Trim is wining.

Harbor freight has suction cups pretty cheap. I would think they’d work great for a one time use deal like this.

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

that a good tip there taskforce... you know I made my 1st visit to Harbor Freight in Austin during the summer. I needed to get a proper brakeover bar when I was installing my Progression Ignition (needed to perfectly set to 10 degrees BTDC). I totally came out with more things than I went in to buy - that place is dangerous the the Credit Card LOL

Talking Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

I made my "quick" trip to Houston and back (actually Katy). I think the slider is in pretty good condition, other than some rust on the latch. Haven't any idea if this is a Factory or Aftermarket Slider.

I also have the non-SS Trim seal on after giving the slider some minor cleaning (the SS Trim seal is backordered till Feb). It is a lot lighter than I thought it would be, I'd image the full glass is heaver.

Now I need a helper and more importantly some balls to cut out a perfectly good and seal window of out my truck!

FYI: No SS is still winning, as of this post: 7 to 4 for no SS Trim.

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

I like the stainless with the slider. But if you only go slider I think it works too, at least you have something that pulls the windshield and the rear together looks wise since the slider is the bright finish vs the black sliders.

Re: Upgrading Slider Window - Keep SS Trim or not?

Yea, that is actually my thought too - to keep the SS Trim balanced between front and rear. I'll get to live with the non-SS Trim option for a bit.

Now I have the seal on the correct way, it was much easier doing it a second time. I suppose practice makes (easier) perfect!
