Behind the Seat Utility Tray - GM Part #987493
I was walking around AutoFair at the Charlotte Motor Speedway today looking for stuff for my '65 and came across a GM Utility Tray which I've seen pictures of but never one in the wild. It was listed as a tray for a '55 - 59 which it may very well be since there is a slight radius to the back that bolts to the back cab wall above the gas tank. But it will work in my '65 without too much trouble. It was listed for $120, I offered $100 and the guy said he'd be glad to get rid of it since he's been hanging onto it for about 30 years. I didn't find what I was looking for, but picked this up along with a nice original grill for my brother's '55.2 Chevy 3100.
The tray itself is in really nice condition but they probably don't get much abuse sitting behind the seat.

Yea I really like that! Something to put some tools in, bottle jack, fire extinguisher… would really like to see how it looks

I've been playing around with this the past couple days, under the vinyl liner was scaly rust, but it wasn't rusted through. A few passes with a wire wheel and a coat of POR-15 fixed that and I think I'll use toolbox liner in it. I bolted it the back wall braces for the gas tank. I used nutserts in the holes, I really didn't want to drill through the cab wall. I bent one of the braces to make it work with a '64-66. It looks good, but the big question is whether or not the seat will hit it, or if I'll have to drive with my knees in the dash if I want to leave it. I'm not going to drill any holes under the window until I get the carpet and seats in. I can also drop the whole tray down to floor level behind the seat if needed.
  If I can use it I need to decide if I should paint it interior color or use a hammered paint... think silver/gray would look period correct. Last edited by 61hawk; 04-10-2022 at 02:51 PM. |

After way too long, I finally got it installed. Just need to paint it now. Thinking the same color as the interior.
And yes, this is how my ACC back panel carpet was cut... to get it to line up straight along the top I had a huge wrinkle in the middle.
