72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

Not sure if there is another thread on this, but I know there has been some debate on whether some Custom Deluxe models came with lower woodgrain trim. I just pulled in this unmolested farm truck with 70K miles and original paint and it does have the woodgrain lower. It is a Flint built truck built in Sept. of '71.

I had this truck years ago
It was original paint when I got it
I painted it
And put the original woodgrain lower molding back on

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

This has been debated before, did Custom Deluxe trucks get woodgrain. I have have owned and seen others that were all original with woodgrain trim. Did Custom Deluxe trim include woodgrain? Nope! Not supposed to. Did some come through that way? Yep! At least some sure did.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

One thing I've mentioned is related to the firewall marking for the body side moldings. Trucks that should receive woodgrain moldings normally are marked with "T4" or "4T" on the firewall. I'm interested to learn if any of the Custom Deluxe firewalls have the T4 or 4T marking.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

Kind a like trying to figure out which custom deluxe suburban has wood grain on the lower moldings and wood grain inserts on the door panels. Maybe I’m just ignorant on the codes on the suburbans but they have the same quirks.

I'd like to see if anything comes from that.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

Ol Blue started life as a custom deluxe and had woodgrain moulding. The original owner told me he checked the box for it when he ordered the truck.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

My 72 Custom Deluxe has woodgrain. It's original, rust and all. The firewall is marked with a 2T, for what that's worth.

No firewall markings on this one either. Only has “247” behind the distributor on firewall. Nothing across the cowl area at all.

Does the “Belt mounding” option mean anything? (Wood grain wise)

Belt molding is the piece on the back of cab under rear window. My 72 had lower woodgrain as well. As said lower molding is still an option on the Custom Deluxe. Pic of SPID from my thread https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...2&postcount=14

Belt molding is the upper trim and would have no bearing on the lower being black or wood. The small stainless trim under the rear window is the paint divider trim. This would not be listed on the SPID but was used on all trucks with two-tone paint.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

I thought that belt mounding was the upper trim. That wouldn't have anything to do with woodgrain either.

Belt molding is the upper trim.

I have this truck out back with wood grain molding and T2 on the firewall.

Straight and rusty. The truck is virtually untouched except the plaid seat is long gone.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

I believe T2/2T was the firewall marking for the black lower body molding. While T4/4T was for woodgrain.

Therefore, every CheyenneCheyenne Super with original "T" firewall markings will be T4, others will be T2.

That doesn't mean that's the molding that was installed, but the molding that was intended for the truck.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

I seem to notice most highlander optioned trucks with lower trim having woodgrain molding. No mention of that in any highlander info I have seen though.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe with woodgrain trim

^^^ That's how I always thought it was until I came here. We had threads on this way back that I recall came up with black trim being the norm, or even doubting woodgrain was original. I don't recall exactly how that came to be. I guess lots of people had mostly black trim trucks. I just know it made me doubt what I thought I knew. Maybe someone could dig an old thread up frpm back then

Maybe it was a plant thing, but all the Highlanders I ever saw around here had woodgrain.

Blue was ordered in Colorado, it was built in St Louis. But, I know my trim was ordered though.
