Okay, 68 C10 Shortbed Fleetside...not that any of that matters...

Front Driver's Wheel Squeaks during rotation (drum brakes). Squeaks with drum ON...does not squeak with drum OFF...so, it's not a wheel bearing. New brakes, new rotor, new bearings, new springs...etc.. Everything is greased that should be. Nothing is greased that should NOT be.

Squeak changes when brake is applied (mutes approximately 50%) but does not disappear.

Visually, everything looks right. Brakes were a little tight on this wheel...but only a little...backed that off to be correct, and squeak is lessened, but not gone...

I'm suspecting my NEW drum is not perfect. Opinions ?

What's next ? Try another (new) drum ? Do it all again ?

Swap front drums side to side.
If the noise goes to the right it’s the drum.

If you have the drum off to do what geezer#99 suggests, take a picture of it and post here and that will put more eyes on it so we can see a spring or lever may be assembled incorrectly. Drive it for a couple hundred miles (or at least a few dozen) and see if it goes away.

Check the cotter key on the castle nut isn’t contacting the dust cap also.

See if this "cup" is just barely scraping the drum.

I'll revisit these suggestions next weekend when I'm back in the garage. You've all given me some food for thought. I'll be sure to report back with results...

Okay, getting back into this...I checked all the kotter pins and made sure that none of them were contacting the cover...but don't think that was it.

I switched the drums out and didn't notice anything...trouble is that the noise doesn't show up cold...but only after about a mile or two of driving does it begin...

Here's some pics to see if anyone can see anything I missed...

pulled checked and repacked the bearings...all looked well and each small bearing cylinder spun easily with fingers. Squeak remains...Not sure where to look now.

From this point, I feel like I'd just be throwing parts at it.

I can’t see in your pics but did you put a dab of grease on the raised bumps on the backing plate where the shoe slides?

Aye, may be squeaking from lack of lube at shoe contacts or hardware.

Do you have one that has a slightly taller head? Could make contact somewhere when hub warms up.
Otherwise have you tried swapping shoes front to back.

Your dust caps look dented in. Could you take them off for a quick test run and see if the squeak goes away? Good luck!

No, and they are far away from contacting anything... so that can't be it.

Well, it looks like it was the backing plate. There's a small inward dent at the top. I moved it some and the squeak went 90% quieter. So, I'll take that off this next weekend and see how that goes.

Good to hear.

A punch and small Dremel tool may save some teardown process.

Just cover the shaft and use cleaner to clear and remove any metal shavings.
