Parking Break Rear Cable Help.
 

Swapping out the 8-lug 3/4 ton rear end for a 5-lug 1/2 rear end. Can I use the stock rear parking brake cables from the 3/4 ton brakes on the 1/2 brakes? I have the cables from my original rear end. The 1/2 rear end didn't come with any so trying to use what I already have.

Putting 1971 C10 1/2T 5-lug rear end in a 1969 C20 3/4T Suburban.

(I tried looking up park numbers to compare the two but can't find a part number for my suburban)

No you will have to get the cables for the 1/2 ton rearend

I don't believe you can as the 3/4 ton axle has different sized drums and backing plates so the inter-cable is likely a different length.

I don't believe there any difference in a regular long bed pickup and a Burban part numbers for the rear cables as I don't remember having any problems getting new ones for mine though NAPA back in 2017. Just be sure the person behind the counter understands which springs you have. They may have to look in the book (:ack:) if their computer doesn't tell them which is which.

Thanks. Yeah, went and looked at the cables last night. Cables on the 3/4T axle bolt to the backing plate while the 1/2T push thru the backing plate. So based on that I knew I needed 1/2T cables. However you just cleared up my next question, if the burbans ran the long bed cables. Although, looking at Truck Shop and LMC it looks like the same rear cables are used on both Short Bed and Long Bed trucks (and Suburbans). Is my research correct?

I'm pretty sure the rear cables are the same for long and short beds. They both use the same trailing arms so the difference is made up with the intermediate cable.

That's what I was thinking about the trailing arms too. That's for reassuring my thought..

It's been several years (2017) since i replaced the rear cables on my 1/2 ton SWB.. If I remember correctly, the front rear cables are the same for all 1/2 tons with coil springs - SWB, LWB, and Suburbans. The intermediate cable is determined by the wheel base.

The rear cables are different lengths depending on coil spring or leaf spring rear end.

I suppose the front cable might be different for the earlier hand lever vs the later pedal type.
