my brother called me tonight and wanted to know how to take the rear drums off his 66 or maybe its a 65

long step. i think this is a half ton truck. he told me 4 guys were looking at it and none of them could figure it out. is there some trick to removing these?

Isn't there an adjustment hole. If so look inside that and turn the sprocket. You may have to turn it pretty far to get the drum to come loose. You can use a flat head screw driver or one of the special brake adjustment tools. I know later model drums are like that. The plug in the adjustment hole can be rubber or may be a steel plate you have to knock out. The ones I have seen are oval shaped and on the inboard side of the drum.

I don't know for sure if this applies to your brother's truck, but it is worth a look.

Is he sure it's a 1/2 ton truck? Six lugs is a 1/2 ton, but if it's got 8 lugs it's a 3/4 ton. You have to remove the axles and hubs on those. If the 1/2 ton drums are loose but just won't come off, then you need to loosen the brakes like coltfan said. But if they're stuck to the axle, spray penetrating oil around the lug bolts and axle flanges, then smack the outer edge of the face with a big hammer. Usually they'll pop loose. Hope that helps.
