if i switched to a carb and old hei, what other things could i do to wake the motor up?
mabey like an eldebrock performer intake and cam and lifters? or what? what about 700r4's? will they hold up behind this motor? thanks for the input. tommie |

tommie, it depends on how you intend to use the truck.
You're cam, intake and carb should be matched to the intended usage of the truck. If you want a good running daily driver, keep the cam selection on the milder side. You'd want to maximize torque - not hard to do with a big-block  A good torque building hydraulic cam, a good used Performer RPM intake, and a 750 Edelbrock carb with electric choke will really wake up that 454 to be a serious tire-fryer as well as being easy to live with on an everyday basis. If you're building a weekend warrior, go as wild as you like. I've seen 700R's that can live behind a mild big block, but I'd keep the turbo 400 that's with the motor, or step up to a 4L80E. Just my opinion. SC

I can sure vouch that the older ('88 - '93) 454's with tbi are dogs. I had an '88 1 ton and it was sluggish. Then I had a '93 and it was bad as well. Then I got a '97 tpi (I think its called) and it will run pretty good bone stock. These are all 4x4's so never drag them. I now also have an '01 8.1 liter (496 ci) and it will move - fun to drive but not to gas up

The other thing to keep in mind is that the BB from the newer trucks are only like 7.8:1 compression. If you are going to "wake it up" you should raise the compression.
