Radiator for a 62 BBC

I've changed my mind again for about the 5th time, and gonna put my 454 in the 62 4x4 suburban. Eventually convert it to TBI. I have just about all the parts to do it, less headers but thats not a problem. The rad in the truck now is good, but I don't think it will be enough to keep the motor cool. The motor will be mostly stock, mild cam, alum intake and headers. I have my car to go fast in, I want this to be a driver. What did you use for a rad?? There is a race car shop down the road that has a good selection of alum ones, so if I had the size I could get one there.

You could always use a radiator from a GMC with a V-6 from about the same year
as your 'burb. 305/351 GMC's held 7 gallons in their cooling system. That ought to
be plenty to cool down a warmed over rat motor.

There was a heavy duty radiator for that year that had an extra row in it. 3 rows versus 2. Don't know if that helps.

Can't think of the catalog I was looking at, but they listed a 4 core rad for my year. Says the sixe is roughly 22" by 27". Looking in summitracing.com, they don't have a rad like that, it's either 22 long but not the right height, etc. Once I start to tear it apart, gonna measure and see how much can be trimmed to fit a bigger rad in. Too bad couldn't use the one out of the donor truck, brand new HD 4 core, like 30-some inches wide, and has engine oil cooler on it already. I have a feeling nothing is gonna go smooth on this....

Cochran63, that would be great if you can get some measurements, it would save me some hassle!! Does it run hot, any cooling probs?? Not sure if I'm gonna go with an electric fan, or keep the mechanical fan on the 454 now. It's not a clutch fan, and it pulls alot of air. For now think I'm gonna keep the stock fan, didn't get the job I was after, so not gonna have the money I was hoping for....

I used this radiator with a small block 400 with no heating problems, and have only used it to break in the 427 with no over heating problems. I did have to take out that spacer that was infront of the stock radiator to get this one to fit. I will get measuremtents tomorow....been to busy lately.

No hurry here, haven't touched either vehicle in a couple weeks. Whenever you get them is good.

I have a 454 in my '60 GMC 4x4 Suburban using the stock radiator. Bear in mind though that my sub was originally equipped with the large 305 inch V6 GMC engine. I never have had any heating problems, and my 454 is similar to yours (RV cam, alum intake, etc.)
