can anyone help me as to how one makes a solid cowl

Here's how I did it.
1) cut out the vents, and make a piece of metal to fit the hole you just cut.
2) tack weld it all in, slowly and space it, so you don't heat up the metal, and warp it.
3) grind it down and skim coat it and finish sand and prime.
4) repeat for all additional holes.
If you wanna get crazy like I did. You could take out the wiper's and weld them shut too. LOL

I don't need no stinking wipers. hehe

By closing the openings in your cowl you are eliminating the source of fresh air that the blower motor uses, this will cause reduced air flow out vents and cause the blower motor to labor harder shortening the life of blower motor unless you open the kick panel vent doors so that the blower motor can draw air from inside the cab. You will also be eliminating fresh air from being able to enter the cab through your kick panel fresh air doors by blocking the cowl off.
Just though I should mention this in case you had not already realized these things.

Not to completely disagree but, that would make the assumption that the cowl is completely sealed off. I don't know anything on my truck's body that is completely sealed.

If you use an aftermarket a/c- heat like Vintage Air the fan is in the cab and does not use the cowl vents like the factory fan does. Fresh air is as close as your side window. Go for it!

I want to shave the cowl too. My idea is to use a 50's vehicles cowl vent system where it sits flush and then you pull a lever which raises the vent and draws it in. It would still be shaved and still also be functional. What do you guys think?

I have got a guy making a riberglass one for me! Unfortunatly he is taking his sweet A$$ time! Once he gets the mold done he is going to sell them. I don't know for how much but when I find out everyone on this site will be the first to know

Indeed. I've been holding my breath (hmmmmmph) to hear the status on the glass ones. I'm about to give up, which means he'll be one customer farther back from being able to recoup the mold costs

Well, since I came up with the idea....... Somebody should make one for me

. I figured a person could use it just like that one with a regular hood, but with a cowl hood you would need two of them and have them towards the outside so you can still draw in air. I would love to see somebody that makes one to figure out what else would have to be done. I have not (obviously) done this. I have had lots of people tell me to shave the cowl, but I couldn't figure out how else to get air inside. Finally I thought of this. No reason why it shouldn't work.

I'm getting much closer though... and if I end up doing my own, I've got to build in lead time for doing the work. If I wait "last minute" for your buddy's part (which I still don't have any idea of price, so he may yet price me out of the market) and I can't afford it or he doesn't come through, then I'm back to square one exect for the lost time. So, as the program managers of the world do, I've got to make a plan where critical paths are either redundant or eliminated

Went to a couple of body shops today some will not touch custom stuff and the ones that would ranged in the $375- $500 range. Looks like I'm gonna start welding and cutting myself, might not be as nice but will give a shot its only metal.
