How popular is Custom/20s???

I have a chance to buy a 71 Custom/20 and was wondering how popular they are? My father-in-law says they are not as easy to sell as the 1/2 tons. Of course, he does look at everything as a profit and he is a Ford person. I want to make an extra vehicle out of it. The cab is decent shape, the bed is in pretty bad shape. It has power disk brakes, power steering and a 350. I heard it run today and it was pretty smooth. The owner thinks it really needs new calipers.

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

I prefer 8-luggers,always have.IMO,if it`s a longbed I want it to be a 3/4t.I don`t think ones worth another between 1/2t and 3/4t.It`s other factors that determine value.
If your father-in-law only looks at everything as a profit, what`s he doin`messing w/FlOoReDs?Any old Chevy beats a Ford anyday on resale.Guys that like Fords like`em new from what I see.

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

I am with SPECIAL K...I love those 8 lugs and long beds............Now with that said......most YOUNG people dont!!! I think it depends on your age. Most 16-35 year olds prefer 5 lugs and short beds because they are sportier. It depends on what you are going to do with it.....there are very few choices for "sporty" 8 lug wheels that are reasonably priced. I have bought and sold here in the south east most of my life......Virginia and Georgia mainly and long beds do normally sell cheaper and take longer to move. Most every long bed I have sold was bought by someone over 40. Thats not to take away from a long bed!!! I have several longs and several shorts. If you are going to make a hauler...a 3/4 ton long bed is the way to go. I personally think long beds look better than short beds lowered.

It really doesnt matter long or short, 1/2 or 3/4, truck, Blazer or Suburban .......if you like the truck and you want a cool driver.......any 67-72 will do because they are all COOL!!!!!!!!!

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

Thanks for the replys. Sorry there were no pics, I didn't have my camera with me when we stopped and looked at it. Something else I forgot to do was look in the glove box for options. Sometimes I just lose my train of thought. What is really nice is the wife was with me and she was all over it more than I was. I couldn't even ask the owner any questions because she was busy doing all of the talking. It is nice to have a wife that supports all of your habits.

The owner is asking $1200 so the wife and I are taking the weekend to talk it over. I think we will probably go for it. I will post the decision and maybe some pics after it comes home.

Cheers,
Tony

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

I guess I'm out of the norm too then. I'm 35 and have a short step, but would prefer a long fleet. Actually I'd like a K20 fleetside. I want a truck to work in, although I want it to look good too. If I want to cruise around in a toy, I'll get the Corvette out of the garage.

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

I have to agree. I am 34 and I like most all of the 67-72 trucks. I do prefer the fleet to a step though. But I think that with all trucks. My wife was a step person for many years and I think she has changed her mind and likes the fleets better. I want a truck that I can use but I still want it to look good.

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

I like`em all.But one thing. The C/20s can be better survivors in parts of the country where that`s rare.If they were primarily used for camper hauling, they passed-up alot of winter driving, didn`t get beat or worked hard, the miles would be mostly hiway, maintainence was kept up,and alot had comfort & trim options, big blocks, and other nice options.

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

man... yesterday when i was at the gas station, a young 19 or 20 year old woman (girl??) got out of a car, and I saw she was quite a hottie... I felt pretty old when I said... out loud... Man... I wonder what her mom looks like.
Then this... long beds are for old ppl.

MAn, I'm only 32...that is WAY too young to be this old.

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

Yep.were all getting older..........you can also tell your taste is getting "older" when you look for trucks with cab lights. When we were younger we called them GRAMPA LIGHTS. Now I spend time adding them to some of my trucks.

Its nuts!!!!!!!!!

I'm so old I have four wheels on the back end for stability, and cab lights to show me where the hood is!

Re: How popular is Custom/20s???

Had this at 18. Ended up selling it cheap because I was desperate for cash when I moved to NC. I'd love to know where it is today... It only needed light rocker work at the time, everything else was perfect.

My dad, just before that, had a '71 K20, too. It was his plow and daily work truck since 1974. Ironically, a year after we traded it for that white '67, the kid who bought it had it torn to pieces. Not wrecked, but he somehow managed to mess up the frame, bust up the plow connections, get dings and dents throughout the entire body, rip off the rockers (which were good,) and bust out one of the rear leaf spring packs. Ouch. We could have bought it back for $500, but my dad was so upset when he saw it, he just walked away.

In any event, I have no 3/4's now, but I like 'em just fine. And I'd love to get that white one back.
